Adult book review: A Girl's Guide to Vampires (Dark Ones #1) by Katie MacAlister

Image
Mass Market Paperback:  400 pages Publisher: Avon; Reissue edition (December 28, 2010) Summary: Joy Randall's Top 5 Tips for Vampire Hunters: 1) Location, location, location. Vampires won't be caught dead (ha!) in places like discos, ten-minute lube shops, or Switzerland. Remember, if you wouldn't be there, neither would a bloodsucker. 2) Trust your eyes. You know the handsome, annoyingly arrogant, self-assured man in the shadows with long hair and a cleft in his chin? He's your vampire. 3) No matter how tempting it might be, do not "accidentally" acquire a paper cut on your finger and suggest your vampire kiss it to make it better. 4) Play it cool. Don't offer to accompany your prince of the night on the talk-show circuit, and whatever you do, don't offer him your heart! 5) Most of all, remember: being a vampire is nothing to laugh about. My review: When I need a break from the deeper and darker vampires created by some of my favorite adult aut...

Waiting on Wednesday (May 18, 2011)

Image
This Wednesday we are looking forward to reading these three YA titles: Misfit  by Jon Skovron Summary:   Jael Thompson has never really fit in. She’s changed schools too many times to count. The only family she’s ever known is her father, a bitter ex-priest who never lets her date and insists she attend the strictest Catholic school in Seattle. And her mother—well, she was a five thousand year old demon. That doesn’t exactly help. But on her sixteenth birthday, her father gives her a present that brings about some unexpected changes. Some of the changes, like strange and wonderful powers and the cute skater boy with a knack for science, are awesome. But others, like the homicidal demon seeking revenge on her family? Not so much. Steeped in mythology, this is an epic tale of a heroine who balances old world with new, science with magic, and the terrifying depths of the underworld with the ordinary halls of high school. Misfit , 384 pages, will be published on ...

Teaser Tuesdays (May 17, 2011)

Image
Teaser Tuesdays  is a weekly meme hosted by  Miz B  at  ShouldBeReading  where you randomly take two l ines from your current read and highlight them in a post. Our choice this week is from Steel by Carrie Vaughn. "Jill was in something of a panic--she hadn't thought this through, she knew nothing about how Blane fought, it was dark, hard to see by wavering firelight, the ground was rocky, all of it about the worst conditions for a fight she could imagine. But at least she recognized that she was panicking. She might be able to at least stave it off before Blane ran her through--" Yep, that's three lines but I didn't want to end on the second line. Wasn't the third line a hooker? It certainly kept me reading. Steel is turning out to be a fun read and don'tcha just love that cover?! My review will be up soon.  What's your Teaser Tuesday  pick?

Bloodmaiden Blog Tour stop & Giveaway

ReaderGirls is today's stop for the Bloodmaiden Book Tour today. We welcome author Christine E. Schulze. Bloodmaiden's summary: Zale. Gauthier. Varden. These three dynasties... They all sound like something out of an ancient, oriental myth or fairy tale. The concept of humans and dragons helping and living in harmony with one another, without fear. To me, that's exactly what they are. A distant dream only read of, whispered secretly, quietly yearned for. For, you see, I am the new Quelda of Tynan. These words echo the mystery, horror, and romance found within Schulze's fantasy novel. Along with her new husband, Chalom, Crislin must choose to embrace cruel tradition, run from it, or stand against it. The young couple's only hope is to rally the help of the three peaceful dragon dynasties of Sulaimon-but tradition is not on their side, even outside the realm of Tynan. The dragons outside Tynan's borders have been rumored as too stubborn and proud to believe their...
