Fifteen-year-old Oliver Grain begins his school year fighting off bullies, learning about the boy who committed suicide in his room, and trying to understand why his history teacher, Mr. Gordon, has taken such a personal interest in him.

Do you believe in ghosts? Do you believe you can make bullies simply disappear? Do you believe you can walk through walls?

Mr. Gordon tells Oliver: "When you truly believe anything is possible, you will be able to open doors where there were only walls." And one of those doors leads Oliver to Provex City, which puts him in far greater danger than he can possibly fathom.

In SUSY Asylum, there is no release. There is no escape. No hope.

Oliver and Desiree are introduced to the writings of a mysterious blogger, Commodore Chaos, when they return to Provex City to indulge in what the sublime city has to offer. The blogger claims the Lornes are collecting people venturing between the higher planes of awareness and locking them away in a mythical asylum. But are these legitimate concerns for inter-plane travelers or just the ramblings of an anonymous conspiracy blogger?

Oliver looks to Provex City as his only connection to his father while Desiree looks to the city as an escape from the torment of losing her best friend—again. Provex City is a wonder of beautiful treasures, entrancing them to continue returning. But behind the beauty, wolves have continued hunting Oliver, a boy who is still unaware of his importance in the rebellion.

Oliver’s belief is waning. Desiree will not always be by his side. Mr. Gordon will not always come to his aid. Oliver finds himself alone, forced to confront his biggest fears, fight his inner demons, and face the very cold reality that no one is coming to save him.

Welcome to SUSY Asylum.

"Top Ten Things Oliver Likes About Provex City"

There are a great many things that Oliver doesn’t know about Provex City, such as its rich history and world renowned arts and entertainment culture. All he has is his limited experience from his few ventures into the wondrous city, which usually involved something bad happening to him or his friends in the end. But with that said, the city offers plenty of awe and inspiration. Here are a few things Oliver already loves about the city:

  1. The city represents freedom and new beginnings. Oliver and Desiree take full advantage of their unsupervised visits into the city, which always start out well…and typically end less than ideal.
  2. Provex City represents a doorway of opportunity. The city has provided the biggest paradigm shift for Oliver. It was one thing for him to see through the wall of his room and into the courtyard, but it changed his entire perspective on life, possibility, and awareness to gaze onto a bright and sublime city in a whole new realm.
  3. Provex City offers the first true connection for him to his father.
  4. The medical advances with energy healing. Mr. Gordon has the ability to heal instantaneously, but the energy healing medical facilities in Provex City are still amazing in Oliver’s eyes—especially in seeing the rehabilitation differences between his step father and him after their paralleled automobile accidents.
  5. The cityscape itself. Oliver’s seen the city from several vantage points—from above the clouds to the rocketing monorail—and all of them are breathtakingly unreal.
  6. The VIP treatment while impersonating a Lorne. There are many perks of being a Lorne in a city—and plane—where the name and mark are so revered. But like all true gambles, it usually costs more than what was intended.
  7. The automotive network. Provex City is a heavily populated metropolitan area, but one where gridlock traffic is not a concern thanks to the automotive network. When the cars are linked into it, the flow of traffic moves with perfect precision, eliminating 95% of human error.
  8. The semi permeable crosswalk tubes. Oliver stops to watch cars pass through him in the crosswalk tubes several times. The tubes use a technology that is primitively built on the principles Oliver’s learning from Mr. Gordon with walking through walls. The tubes are fabricated from a semi permeable energized material that allows intended objects to pass through while remaining solid for others. It is a technology that still feels like magic.
  9. The cleanliness and affluence of the city. Provex City seems to be rich in all aspects and Oliver sees that juxtaposition when Desiree and he transitioned back to Los Angeles after their dispute at Le7el.
  10. Desiree. Provex City has been where Oliver and Desiree’s relationship progressed to what he’s always wanted—with their first kiss and first date—though when they return home, their relationship tends to revert back to “just friends,” frustrating Oliver immensely. The city has become one of those special songs that takes you back to a certain memory that will be forever etched in your mind. Every time the song plays, you’re transported to the time and place of that memory immediately. Provex City has become one of those memory triggers for Oliver, which will forevermore remind him of Desiree.

About Michael Pierce:
I believe in a future where I will be able to write full-time, a picture I already hold vividly in my mind. It all starts with my debut young adult novel, Provex City. I love Harry Potter & The Marbury Lens, Tool & Elliott Smith, Dexter & Donnie Darko, bold coffee & amber ale. I also love dabbling with writing music and recording, with no illusions of ever making it a career. I am ecstatically married and the lucky father to a beautiful baby girl.
