Guest Post: An interview by Bianca from Kimber An's Sugar Rush
Before we share Bianca's interview, let's give the summary for the recently released Crushed Sugar, the prequel novella to Sugar Rush:
Be careful what you wish for.
Ophelia’s had a wicked crush on Martin since they were kids, but she was always just his geeky little friend. Then, on the first day of her junior year, he’s suddenly and wildly attracted to her. She can’t imagine what’s changed, but shocking her small school’s social order fills her with vindication for insults suffered.
Ophelia meets Adrian right after and true love extinguishes the wicked crush. In secret, he gives her courage against a specter threat.
Tristan Li is pale and hungry, and draws Martin’s immediate ire. He knows things about Ophelia which she assumes are delusions brought on by an aggravated illness like her own, diabetes. When battle breaks out between his ancient race and new blood, even the courage of her secret love might be crushed.

Running and screaming will have to wait. A blood-sucking dead guy may be a vampire to you, but he’s an alien/human hybrid to Ophelia and she really must examine his olfactory nerve under a microscope first.
Ophelia longs to be free, free of diabetes, free of her ex-boyfriend, free to live.Something transformed Martin and made her his drug. If he has his way, she’ll never achieve the freedom to learn his true nature and origin.
Adrian’s the new guy in school. He faked his identity to get close to Ophelia, knowing the monsters who took his diabetic sister would try to take Ophelia, too. Then, he’d have them. But, he knew better than to get too close.
Oh, yeah, he did. Seriously.

Bianca Interviews Adrian and Ophelia About Great Romantic Couples in Literature
Bianca’s side of the bedroom is identical to her twin sister’s, except that it looks like a bomb hit it. A strip of silvery duct tape runs down the middle. On her side, dirty laundry is strewn over the white wrought iron bed, chair, heaped on the floor. A sewing machine sits on the desk underneath a pile of fabric and patterns. The dressmaker’s dummy wears a garlic necklace.
She scoops up her clipboard and dares tromp into the forbidden, her sister’s pristinely neat side of the room. “You promised to help me with my homework!”
“I’m doing calculus.” Ophelia sits at her sleek new computer to her otherwise identical desk. Like her sister, she has long, dark red hair.
Emitting a high-pitched growling shriek, Bianca slams the clipboard into the floor. “You promised!”
“Got ya covered.” A boy’s hand pats her shoulder and Adrian steps up behind Ophelia. He’s not too tall, but he’s got a gorgeous head of blond hair. He waves a computer game in front of her face. “Look what I got for you.”
“The new Solar Bomber game!” Ophelia grabs in both hands, green eyes lit with passion. She throws an arm around his neck and kisses his tanned cheek. “Thank you!”
“All right, all right, c’mon.” In one deft maneuver, Adrian pivots her off the chair and to sit with him on the bed. He shuts down the calculus homework and computer while she rips open the new game.
“Dang, you guys are so good for each other.” Bianca spins the chair around and sits down, clipboard back in her hands. “All right, first question for my journalism homework. Who’s your favorite romantic couple in literature and why?”
Adrian chuckles, watching Ophelia read the game instructions. “Aragorn and Arwyn from The Lord of the Rings trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien. Aragorn’s an exiled prince raised by elves and living a rough life, feels totally unworthy of his girlfriend. Then, Frodo Baggins comes along and he’s got to step up to the plate and be the guy he was born to be, go up against Sauron, destroy the Ring. And after all that he finally gets to be with Arwyn and live happily ever after.”
“Wow, how come none of my boyfriends are that eloquent?”
“They are,” said Adrian. “You just never let them talk.”
“Huh!” Bianca smacks the clipboard over his head. “All right, Ophelia, your turn.”
Ophelia is still examining the Solar Bomber game inserts and takes no notice of her high-strung sister.
“Ophelia!” Bianca’s eyeballs seem to come unhinged. “Do something, Adrian.”
Adrian digs into his pocket and comes up with a ball of fake fur. He dances it across the game’s case.
“A tribble!” Ophelia grabs it.
“Ophelia!” Bianca grabs the iconic toy from the original Star Trek show. “Who’s your favorite romantic couple in literature and why?”
“Uh…” Ophelia shifts gaze from her sister to Adrian and back. “Tom and B’Ellana from Star Trek Voyager.”
Adrian laughs.
“You are such a geek!” Bianca releases the tribble. “Star Trek is not literature!”
“Yes, it is!” Ophelia’s tone goes immediately defensive. “There are hundreds of Star Trek books and comics! Thousands, maybe!”
“Your teacher will understand,” says Adrian in a calm tone. “She’s got Ophelia for Honors English.”
“Oh, right. Okay, fine, so why Tom and B’Elanna.”
“Well…” Ophelia’s gaze wonders around the ceiling like the answer is up there. “Because, Tom is blond and really cute and a pilot and…B’Ellana can fix anything. She’s the Chief Engineer, you know. She’s kind of exiled from the Klingons, grows up with humans, lives a rough life and then gets flung to the other side of the galaxy and has to step and be the girl she was meant to be, get her crew home, and then she gets to be with Tom and live happily ever after.”
Bianca’s brow cinches and she looks from her sister to Adrian. “Is there an echo in here?”
Adrian shrugs. “Science Fiction is just the geeky kid sister of the Fantasy genre. They’re both based on the mythic story which explores the unknown and tries to make sense of it.”
“Oookay.”

About the author:
Kimber An never had enough books when she was a kid and the ones she had didn't turn out the way she wanted. And so she started writing her own. She also loved babies a lot, but didn't know how to talk to boys. Instead, she became a nanny and took care of other people's babies. Finally, she moved to Alaska where she met a boy who understood getting whacked in the head with a wadded up piece of paper meant true love. She married him and now she reads books to her own babies, and is living happily ever after.
