Still Sucks To Be Me by Kimberly Pauley

Reading level: Young Adult
Hardcover: 384 pages
Publisher: Mirrorstone (May 11, 2010)

Summary: With vampire boyfriend George and best friend Serena by her side, Mina thought she had her whole life—or rather afterlife—ahead of her. But then Mina’s parents drop a bomb. They’re moving. To Louisiana. And not somewhere cool like New Orleans, but some teeny, tiny town where cheerleaders and jocks rule the school. Mina has to fake her death, change her name, and leave everything behind, including George and Serena. Not even the Vampire Council’s shape-shifting classes can cheer her up. Then Serena shows up on Mina’s doorstep with some news that sends Mina reeling. Mina may look a lot better with fangs, but her afterlife isn’t any less complicated!

My review: Thank goodness for Kimberly Pauley's comic take on vampires. Still Sucks to be Me is a wonderfully humorous companion to Sucks to be Me. I enjoyed them both. This time around newly turned vampire Mina 'Smith' has been relocated by the VRA with her mother/now sister-in-law and father/now brother to a small town named Cartville, LA. Life has just gotten harder for her stuck in a forgotten town and she's missing Serena and George. Drama has a habit of following Mina around and it certainly does here. Just when Mina is thinking B-O-R-I-N-G, a hot vampire guy whisks her out of an uncomfortable situation, boyfriend George hasn't answered any of her text messages in months, a black Beetle is parked outside and crazy Goth girl Raven may just be in town. And to think nothing ever happens in Boresville USA? Not with sassy Mina around.

Still Sucks to be Me is certainly not boring. Even at 384 pages, the story goes by quickly and winds up with a funny and zany ending. This was a cute and entertaining novel and certainly worth reading, especially if you've read the first book. I wonder what Pauley has next in store for Mina and company?

Favorite scene: "He looks like he's going to argue when a hand mysteriously appears between us. A strong, capable hand attached to a tall, thin, pale guy with piercing blue eyes, a shock of dark auburn hair, and full red lips. He takes my hand like he's going to shake it or maybe kiss it, making Grady drop it in the process.

Where did he come from? It's like he appeared out of nowhere to step in front of Kacie.

"Perhaps I can be of assistance. I was on my way out anyway." The guy whisks me out of there before anyone has a chance to say a word." (page 71 in the ARC)

Cover comment: Similar to the first book's cover with the model and style. They're both cute but okay.
