All magic comes with a price.

The new school year brings with it a welcome return to normalcy after Alice’s narrow escape from a cursed hotel while on summer vacation. But when a young girl drowns in a freak accident that seems eerily similar to her own near-death experience, Alice suspects there might be something going on that not even the police can uncover.

The girl’s older sister, Eva attends Alice’s school, and Alice immediately befriends her. But things change when when Alice learns that Eva is determined to use magic to bring her sister back. She must decide whether to help Eva work the highly dangerous magic or stop her at all costs. After all, no one knows better than Alice the true price of magic.

Book #1

Find the diary, break the curse, step through The Looking Glass!

Fifteen-year-old Alice Montgomery wakes up in the lobby of the B&B where she has been vacationing with her family to a startling discovery: no one can see or hear her. The cheap desk lights have been replaced with gas lamps and the linoleum floor with hardwood and rich Oriental carpeting. Someone has replaced the artwork with eerie paintings of Elizabeth Blackwell, the insane actress and rumored witch who killedherself at the hotel in the 1880s. Alice watches from behind the looking glass where she is haunted by Elizabeth Blackwell. Trapped in the 19th-century version of the hotel, Alice must figure out a way to break Elizabeth’s curse—with the help of Elizabeth's old diary and Tony, the son of a ghost hunter who is investigating the haunted B&B—before she becomes the inn's next victim.

Both books: 4
Cover comment: Gorgeous!
Book source: Month9Books (thank you)

Being able to read two or more of the books in a series back-to-back is my preferred way of enjoying that series. There's no waiting, forgetting or catching up to do simply because I can immediately jump into the next installment. I was able to do exactly that with Jessica Arnold's enchanting YA series, The Looking Glass. First, let me pause to truly appreciate the art of both covers. Gorgeous! I thought the art for both really captured the essence of these books and what Alice has had to endure. Alice. We know the name, we know the classic tale. The Looking Glass, the first book, introduces us to a contemporary Alice, a teen girl with a strange predicament. She's dead, right? Or maybe something else? Lucky for us, readers get to go on her journey of discovery with her.

The author invents and describes this very strange and eerie world Alice finds herself trapped in. The story involves all sorts of magic, witchy things and curses, a love interest and that word readers always hate to see mentioned but keeps us reading into the wee hours of morning--betrayal. We truly get a deep sense of Alice, of who she is and what is happening around her. I'm glad she met Tony. I applaud the author for making the curse into something palpable, something that can move and take form. That in itself--paired together with that house--was incredibly freaky and kept me not only glued to every page but also fully invested. These books are meant to be savored, not devoured. I took my time enjoying them and believe this helped me understand and enjoy them better.

The second book, The Lingering Grace, is different from the first that had this dreamy, surreal feel, like being trapped underwater but confined in a specific space. Alice is back in the real world and there are some weird things going on, things she has suspicions about. And then there's Tony, her boyfriend. They are so cute together. Alice is adjusting to living a normal life but misses the magic of what she experienced. Trying to recapture some of that, she finds a special book and is befriended by a girl named Eva. This girl lost her sister who drowned and Eva needs help because she wants her sister back. Back? That would require.... Magic.

If there's something Alice learned in the first book (which happens to be the tagline of this book) is that doing magic has consequences. Alice survived her own entrapment, can she risk helping someone else? Who exactly is Eva anyway and why does she know so much about spells? Hmm...I'm not saying. The Lingering Grace is filled with thrills, excitement, mystery, love and more of that eerie and strangeness I totally got hooked on in The Looking Glass. This is definitely an intriguing and addictive series.
