She appeared as a splash of color through the shuffling
increase of forms. There, then gone, there, and gone again. He noticed black
cherry blossoms on a field of rich magenta, a whorled knot of dark, (dyed?) burgundy hair, and a delicate jaw
line that curved into a long, flawless neck.
A strange sensation of vertigo overwhelmed him, and he dropped
his lunch bag. He jumped at the sound of his silverware clattering loose. As
the train started forward, he ducked down, misplacing his balance, and fell
sideways into a woman’s faux fur coat, which brought forth a yelp, and an angry
burst of what sounded like Russian. He found the fork at his feet, next to the
bag, but the spoon he’d brought for his pudding cup had traveled deep into the
forest of legs. He murmured apologies as he groped for it, his view blocked by
the woman’s long coat.
“Hey, buddy, what is problem?” The voice from above was
male, thickly accented, tired, and surly.
“Nothing. Sorry, sorry.” He gave up on the spoon and righted
himself. “Sorry,” he said to the stocky, square-jawed kid in black leather. “Sorry.”
He looked again for the woman he’d glimpsed, but couldn’t
find her. Then the movement of the train swayed the crowd and she was there again.
She had been seated, but now was up, casting a searching, slightly bewildered
look about her.
She looked quickly away.
About the author
Matthew Chabin was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico and grew up in Portland, Oregon. He served four years in the US Navy as a ship crewman, journalist and public affairs liaison. He studied literature and philosophy at Southern Oregon University. After graduating in 2010, he started teaching English abroad, working in the Czech Republic and volunteering with the Dalai Lama’s affiliate organization, Tibet Charity, in Dharamsala/Mcleod Ganj, India. He currently lives in Nagano Prefecture of Japan with his wife, Marie, and cat, Futa.
His work has appeared in Gravel: A Literary Journal, Southern Pacific Review, Piker Press, and Black Denim. He is the author of a memoir, Equaling Heaven, which he hopes to see published in the near future.
