Mini book reviews: Consume, Heartbeat, When the World Was Flat (and we were in love), Dark Halo

Consume (The Clann #3)

Savannah and Tristan. Friends since childhood, now lovers. I've been a huge fan of this YA couple from the very beginning. Witches. Vampires. Feuding. Love. Twists and turns. Saying goodbye to the Clann wasn't easy.

The third and final book in the trilogy is told in both Savannah and Tristan's pov as their relationship deepens. There's action and the pace is fast, keeping readers invested and eyes glued to the words. Both characters have undergone some major changes and I enjoyed watching them work things out. Darnell has created such a unique world which isn't easy in a crowded paranormal market.

We see more of the parents in this book (some worth rooting for, some not), but Consume belongs to the two who have created the heart of this series: Savannah and Tristan. The author gives readers everything they need to label this a deeply satisfying YA series. I'm sorry to see it end.

Heartbeat

Elizabeth Scott has done it again. She's made me get a horrible case of the feels and that can be a good thing. This author knows how to spin an engaging story and this contemporary YA is poignant and gripping. Emma's world is shattered when her mom collapses and is declared brain dead, but she cannot die. She is put on life support for the sake of her son still growing inside her. Losing her mother is horrible and she lost her father when she was younger, Emma doesn't agree with what's happening to her mom's body. Feeling lost in her grief, she soon meets Caleb, the bad boy type with his own anger and grief problems. Could he help her feel again?

What I really enjoy about Scott's books is the way she handles teens and teen issues. Yes, there are times I want to throttle the main character, times I understand, and times I wish she'd change or wake up or become a better person. These things are effective since this is how young people are--dealing, coping, acting up, acting out, changing. Emma is no different. I enjoyed Heartbeat immensely, its emotional bumps, and the love story. 

When the World Was Flat (and we were in love)

When the World Was Flat is certainly an intriguing contemporary YA with some sci-fi. Lillie is such an interesting character, despite her attitude and comments about almost everyone. Her voice with its poetic touches grabbed my attention. Things turned even more interesting when Tom showed up. There's something about him that makes Lillie think they know each other. Do they? 

Besides her weird dreams which change after the new guy arrives (the dreams worsen), things aren't what they seem. No spoilers here. The author gives readers something different with this book and I'm grateful to Strange Chemistry for the opportunity to read it.

Dark Halo (Angel Eyes #3)

Oh Brielle, what will you do now with Jake gone? Dark Halo continues what happened in book two and my heart went out to Brielle. This girl has gone through so much, only to lose the guy she loves, and to then meet the Prince of Darkness. Jeez. The Dark Prince offers her a dark halo and the prospect of a normal life. Can she accept? Will she give up her Celestial vision?

Angels. Demons. Continuing battles. Answers are found, secrets are revealed, plot lines reach their ends as we have to say farewell to this entertaining and intriguingly powerful Christian YA series. I'll also admit this is my favorite cover in the series too.
