The Stag Lord grabbed my interest on the opening page and kept me hooked until the very end. Can I say how much I enjoyed author Darby Kaye's adult fantasy novel? I loved her rich descriptions and how everything was easily visualized. I felt as if I was there alongside Cor looking out into a canyon, or beside his father ready to take on any pursuer or watching Shay with her wonderful hands as she healed someone. The rich details of this author's work fae world is steeped in Irish/Celtic mythology and the Tuatha De Danaan and she put her own spin on things to make it unique.
Wow, that opening chapter was tense! I couldn't read fast enough. At the heart of The Stag Lord is Bannerman Boru (they call him Bann) who has given up on his fae people since they didn't help him when he needed them most. On the run from a villainous creature hellbent on destroying the Bannerman lineage, Bann and his young son, Cor, have tired of life on the road. Cor is only eight years old and yet he's experienced things and horrors most adults never have their entire lives. We know something terrible is following them which only adds to the suspense Kaye has deftly created. There were so many intense moments which made me finish the story in one day. I had to know! Plus, I will readily admit my crush on Bann as I read. Shay is very lucky!
I especially loved the family dynamics, the realistic way father and son interacted-from their apparent love of one another to their outbursts of anger or moments of disagreement-each rang true. When they encounter a healer, Shay, the story takes an interesting turn. The interactions between the characters was so fluid, even the dog, Max, was a welcome addition (I'm a sucker for animals in stories).

I've only read one other book by this author (a wonderful YA) and now I need to make a note to check out more of her novels. Solid storytelling, totally believable characters and situations, a rich fantasy lore and world, I thoroughly enjoyed The Stag Lord and look forward to reading the next installment, Unholy Blue, when it's released next December.
