Q: Tell us a little bit about where you live?
A: I live in Westfall, a small town in what was once Missouri, specifically the Ozarks. Westfall has a population of about 10,000 people, all survivors of a nuclear war that occurred fifty years ago. My grandfather, Samuel Westfall, founded the town, but now it is under the control of President Lattimer, whose father took control from my grandfather.
Q: We’ve heard a little bit about how marriages happen in Westfall, can you tell us more?
A: During our sixteenth year, the girls from the losing side (my grandfather’s side) are married to the sons of the winning side. Usually there are interviews and personality tests to determine your best match but, in my case, I am marrying President Lattimer’s son. It’s been destined for years.
Q: How do you feel about that?
A: [Pause] I’m very happy.
Q: There’s been bad blood between your family and the Lattimers for several generations. Is it going to be difficult to be married to a Lattimer, especially a boy you don’t even know?
A: A little, I’m sure. [Pause] I just mean that arranged marriages are bound to be awkward at first. You’ve never even met! But I’m looking forward to our two families uniting and I think it will be good for Westfall.
Q: How do your father and sister feel about the marriage?
A: Can I get a glass of water? Thanks. [Pause] I think my father and sister are excited about the possibilities. And I am, too. Hopefully the relationship will work out for the best.

Amy Engel was born in Kansas and after a childhood spent bouncing between countries (Iran, Taiwan) and states (Kansas; California; Missouri; Washington, D.C.), she settled in Kansas City, Missouri, where she lives with her husband and two kids.
