In the battle against the vampiric Ticks, humanity was slowly but certainly headed for extinction. For months, twin sisters Lily and Mel had been quarantined” with thousands of other young people being harvested for their blood—food for the Ticks. Finally escaping with a few friends, the twins are separated—and must continue the fight on their own . . .

After making it to a resistance base camp in Utah, Lily learned to survive at all costs. But when a Tick attack decimates the fighters, Lily and her pregnant friend, McKenna, decide to make the hard trek north to Canada—and safety.

Meanwhile, Mel is being taught how to survive by the very vampire that turned her. Living without her sister is hard, but dealing with the fact that her autism was cured by the vampire bite is an even bigger challenge.

But when a monstrous betrayal places Lily in mortal danger, Mel must set out to find her, save her, and begin to unravel the empire of destruction that the Ticks have built.

About the Author:

Emily McKay loves to read, shop, and geek out about movies. When she's not writing, she reads online gossip and bakes luscious deserts. She pretends that her weekly yoga practice balances out both of those things. She lives in central Texas with her family and her crazy pets. She also co-writes young adult novels as Ivy Adams.

I found The Farm to be an engrossing story of two twin sisters, Lily and Mel, stuck in a dystopian-like new world where vampiric beings called Ticks roam the land and humans are on their menu. Teens are forced to live in restricted areas called "farms" and Lily wants to take her autistic sister and flee to the unknown outside world. Carter shows up at the farm with one intent: to rescue Lily, but readers already knew she did a good job of taking care of herself and her sister. Filled with adventure, thrilling moments, plenty of tension and an expansive tender love story, The Farm was one of my favorite reads of 2012.

A year later author Emily McKay has rendered this reviewer speechless. Astonished. Aghast. Blown away. The Lair is quite honestly an amazing read. Told from multiple perspectives, this new world is rife with life-threatening dramas, startling discoveries and epic revelations. McKay's writing is as taut as a guitar string--the right amount of words have the power to zing, startle and intrigue. The degree of change and growth these characters undergo is mesmerizing (and I can't find the words to describe how I feel about Sebastian now). Lily, Mel, Carter, and a new cast kept my eyes glued to my ereader. I can't reveal too much since there are major developments I don't want to spoil for anyone so my review will be brief.

Tight writing, solid storytelling mechanics, gasp-inducing plot twists and turns, heart-racing action with a touch of romance, The Lair was simply thrilling. I really liked The Farm. I loved The Lair!
