We will not be caged.

Ryan Zachery lived his life the way all high school teenagers should – carefree. Until he was attacked by an unknown assailer and awoke in the hospital with lycanthropy. Taken by armed guards and dragged away from everything he held dear, Ryan was thrown into a US camp made for those ‘suffering’ from lycanthropy. They caged the beast, but now he will show them that he will never be dehumanized.

Excerpt:
The humming grew so loud that it drowned out any other sound; a tidal wave of vibrations that shook the floor. Ryan felt it in his spine, felt it in the tips of his fingers and toes. He watched, stunned, as a shimmering light expanded around the thing that was the supposed cure to his disease. The shimmering expanded further, reaching out to him like a hand reaching for another. He sat stock-still as he felt his skin crawl, the little hairs along his arms and legs and chest standing on end as the weird vibrating shook his very body. The shimmering overtook his vision, engulfing him in a cocoon of radiation. He heard the machine rocking on its wheels, the Alien Nurses holding it in place. He felt his skin itch, and then go raw. He clenched his teeth, his stomach curdling as realization hit him.

This was it.

He was Changing.

Ryan let loose a powerful roar, the pain running through every cell in his body. The pain stacked itself on top of more pain, growing and spreading. He could hear the sound of cracking and popping, his bones reforming. He convulsed on the table against the restraints, his heart beating so fast he feared it would burst. Veins throbbed in his forehead and arms, blood rushing through them like race cars through a track. He clenched his teeth, his eyes shut tight, trying to withstand the pain and not make a sound. He could hear the guards hooting and hollering at him outside in the hall, laughing at his torment. He snapped his jaw like an angry wolf at them, spittle flapping against his lips. Realizing what he had just done he turned his head away and tried to contain himself. His thoughts were losing lucidity, slowing and becoming more basic. Merging with the wolf’s own panicked thoughts. He could hear its sounds of distress loud in his mind; the growls and howls of a cornered wolf. This was unnatural. Not the natural order. This was an artificial release for the wolf. Not right. It lashed and barked and fought against the Change, but was useless against the forced radiation that activated that part of Ryan. Neither of them could stop this, only stare and watch as audience as the scene played out.

About the author:

Michael Loring was born in Bristol, Connecticut, but has lived in a variety of places such as Florida and Tennessee. He likes to think of himself as an amateur Lycanthropologist, studying werewolves ever since he was eight years old when he first saw An American Werewolf In London. He spent most of his life switching between home school and public school, always focusing on his passion for writing no matter what. His interest in writing was sparked in the second grade when his teacher encouraged him to write short stories for the class, earning him more than one award at school assemblies for Creative Writing. He currently resides in Punta Gorda, FL with his father who, for some unexplainable reason, avoids him during the night of the full moon.
