About the Authors
Christine O'Neil was born and raised in Connecticut, where she spent most of her childhood outdoors catching salamanders, frogs and colds. When she wasn't terrorizing Mother Nature, she was curled up under the covers with her nose in a book. As an adult, she's stopped stalking amphibians, but still loves books. When she isn't reading, she likes to spend her time people-watching. In fact, she's probably watching you RIGHT NOW O_O She's also pretty obsessed with writing YA books, but if she had to pick another profession she would be a ninja...or a Professor of the Dark Arts. I thoroughly loved Jus Accardo's Toxic series and found Darker Days, the first book in her new The Darker Agency series to be an interesting, at times exciting, read. Teen girl Jessie Darker, a mix of witch and demon, is student by day, detective by night. Her latest case comes walking into her family's agency on two long, smoking legs. Lukas needs to have a job done. It seems the seven deadly sins and the box they were housed in are all missing. Jessie has a whopping five days to retrieve the box and the sins before the box reclaims the sins and sucks up the human bodies the sins are inhabiting. Oh, and Lukas has a secret of his own which may or may not impact Jessie's sudden crush on him.
Sins. One Box. Human Hosts. The author has set up an interesting concept with the family detective agency and the case of the missing box of sins. Jessie is a snarky gal, trying to demonstrate her independence, while trying to protect her family and those she loves. Can she complete the job in five days?
Again, as she demonstrated in the Toxic series, Jus Accardo is not afraid of embracing her dark side. Of course, if one's character has witch and demon blood in her veins, she would be dark and Jessie meets her challenges head on, no matter how dark they are. I thought the paranormal world and the idea of an agency was intriguing. Jessie is strong and can take care of herself. She faces her dilemma of what to do about Lukas when she discovers who and what he is. There is the insta-love connection between them and with five days, they do fall pretty fast. This trope didn't bother as much as I thought it would since the element of time was a huge factor in this story. I did wish there were a few more scenes between them to truly exemplify their quick couple status but time can be a witch. What did bother me throughout the story was the dialogue. Jessie's snark was a welcome addition but I couldn't wrap my mind around some of the wording used in the dialogue. Some times I felt I had to stop and re-read something or other times I'd roll my eyes. I understand the character has a quirky way of speaking but it did occasionally grate on my nerves.
The story has a lot going for it and all of it kept my interest. The paranormal aspects, the mythology, the believe-ability of the otherworld, the humans, action, mystery, love and romance offer readers a menu of things to be entertained by. There were some nice twists and turns and the pacing was just right for me. I liked Jessie with the exception of her speech at times, and she has a wonderful cast of friends. The family dynamic was cool, a bit sad about her parents, but still cool. Lukas was an enticing surprise, mysterious and hot. Jus Accardo has another hit on her hands as the first book in her Darker Agency demonstrates. Darker Days is a fun read and only proves that the YA paranormal genre is not going anywhere except into the hands and hearts of hungry readers and fans of all ages everywhere.

Surprisingly, I had to stare at this cover to take it all in. The colors are enticing but then I understood what they meant--the blue of the day and the purple of the paranormal world. That's very cool and Jessie's pose only showcases her kickass snarky demeanor.
