Runes (Runes, Book One) by Ednah Walters
Publication date: May 20th 2013
Genre: YA Paranormal Romance

Seventeen-year-old Raine Cooper has enough on her plate dealing with her father’s disappearance, her mother’s erratic behavior and the possibility of her boyfriend relocating. The last thing she needs is Torin St. James—a mysterious new neighbor with a wicked smile and uncanny way of reading her.

Raine is drawn to Torin’s dark sexiness against her better judgment, until he saves her life with weird marks and she realizes he is different. But by healing her, Torin changes something inside Raine. Now she can’t stop thinking about him. Half the time, she’s not sure whether to fall into his arms or run.

Scared, she sets out to find out what Torin is. But the closer she gets to the truth the more she uncovers something sinister about Torin. What Torin is goes back to an ancient mythology and Raine is somehow part of it. Not only is she and her friends in danger, she must choose a side, but the wrong choice will cost Raine her life.

Ednah Walters is a wonderful storyteller. I loved her Guardian Legacy books (a paranormal YA series) and now there's another series to love. Runes is the first book and sets an intriguing foundation to a new and exciting world. Raine has just turned seventeen. She's very likable and has two close friends, Cora and Eirik. Tragedy has touched her family and her father's been missing for three months since his plane crashed, while her mom optimistically believes he will return. When a new guy moves in next door, Raine immediately fights the temptation to check out his great body and face. This new guy, Torin St. James, is hot, confident, and teases Raine with the word "magic"--something she doesn't think exists. He's a mystery, the bad boy type wearing leather and riding a Harley. His playfulness towards her (calling her "Freckles" was the first step to making him endearing) is a sign of things to come.

As she tries to grow closer to Eirik, changing their status from friend to boyfriend, her attraction to Torin increases. New kids show up to try out for her school's swim team, one has strange tattoos on his body and his eyes follow Raine everywhere. We are given just the right amount of information to entice us and I couldn't wait to see where the story would take me.

With the introduction of Norse mythology and runes, things certainly got interesting! Besides the subject matter, I enjoyed the way the author described the setting of Portland, Oregon, and the plot contained enough twists to keep me wondering. Raine has the right amount of innocence, drive and determination to have readers back her every move as she tries to figure out what's going on with Torin, the strangers and those runes. And where does Eirik now fit in?

YA paranormal fans searching for something different and new will want to read Runes. Action, mystery and romance along with likable characters kept me glued to this book's pages. With the cliffhanger ending, all I have is one question: how do I get my hands on the next one?

Cover comment:
For a paranormal, I'm glad she's not in a prom dress so this cover is cool. I really like the blue and the look on their faces.
