When I began reading Good Vibrations, I thought it would be be great to spend the entire summer on a tropical island. Mallory arrives at the airport in Hawaii and as she goes to get her luggage sees a couple kissing away. While the girl is emotional at their parting, the guy begins flirting with Mallory. This is my first glimpse at Mallory, an outspoken college sophomore who wants to have some fun during her break so she's staying with her best friend, Sunny, who has relocated from Colorado. Mallory has broken-up with her boyfriend and wants to do things she wouldn't usually do. She wants to be free, flirty and have fun. Within the first day, she does. The same guy from earlier is outside and this is our first peek at Ethan, the hot, Maserati driving rich hunk she wants to dislike. You know what they say about opposites attract?

I'll admit with the opening chapters, I thought Good Vibrations was going to be one of those New Adult books with lots of sex and some story (to be fair, not all NA is like this and I've loved many of the titles I've read but there's a crop of them which falls into this lots of sex and less on story trope). I was pleasantly surprised. And there are two narrators so we get a full view of the goings on between Mallory and Ethan. Mallory doesn't want to become emotionally attached to the town "bad-boy" and Ethan says he isn't relationship material. One afternoon with these two and the reader knows there's some serious chemistry going on. Mallory does resist by dating Hawaiian native, Noah. There's bad blood between these two guys and a mystery Mallory wants to solve. Ethan wants to continue with his womanizing ways but can't when his mind drifts back to the long-haired girl with green eyes.

Good Vibrations is a romance and character study. I was leery of Mallory's quickness to get into a car with a strange guy. My New York sense of trust buzzed like an alarm clock, but I went with the story, knowing this was fiction. I'd forgotten this was a dual narrative and was stoked to see Ethan's name appear on top of a chapter farther in. It took a while for me to get into his head, I didn't trust him, but I liked him the more I read. Mallory was my favorite, though at times I wanted to shake her. She trusted a guy with her life when she got into his car when she first met him, but doesn't want to extend this to her heart after she's slept with him numerous times? Yes, I did get invested in this story and after thinking about it, realized I contradict  myself all the time so Mallory was realistic in her actions (except for the car ride). Bringing in Noah and the love triangle was interesting, even if I thought he didn't stand a chance next to Ethan's chemistry. Since this does take place in Hawaii, I wanted more description in places. I liked the secondary characters, especially Sunny and Ethan's sister, Kate.

This is the first book in a series so some things will not be resolved. Summer is over and what happens next? Guess we'll find out in book two. Seeking a steamy, fun romance to pack away on vacation? Good Vibrations may be the read to enjoy under the warm sun. Recommended.
