Different species. Mortal enemies. It'll never work, but they'll die trying.

Autumn Rossi thought she was a normal teenager. Suddenly, she can outrun creatures in the forest, making her wonder if she’s even human.

When the new guy at school, Zack de Luca, witnesses a questionable scene, he unfairly pins her as stuck-up. He acts like he hates her, yet he keeps bailing her out of trouble. Not only is Zack insufferable and irresistible, he seems to sniff her anytime he gets close.

As passion flares between them, Autumn isn’t sure which is more dangerous: her psycho ex-boyfriend, or falling for Zack — who’s risking his life just by being near her.

Excerpt:
I tossed the makeup bag into my backpack, slung it over my shoulder and whipped open the door. Barreling out of the bathroom, I slammed into what felt like a walking boulder. I ricocheted off the human rock and my backpack hit the wall behind me, throwing me off balance and pitching me forward into the hard, linoleum tile.

My palms cushioned my fall, but I winced as pain spiked up my wrists. On all fours, I lifted my chin and peeked through mycurtain of dark hair.

He wore a black tee that molded to his wide, muscular shoulders and jeans that fit over powerful legs. Wow. I’d thought mysoon-to-be-ex-boyfriend was cute, but this guy…

“You okay?” the hottie asked in a sexy, gravelly voice, stretching a hand toward me. His hand wrapped around mine and effortlessly pulled me up, as if I weighed no more than my calculus book. Maybe it was the throbbing in my limbs or the warmth of his hands on my elbows. Or maybe it was his earthy scent invading my senses, but a wave of dizziness hit me and I tipped forward.

His hands shot to my hips to steady me. “Easy there.”

I stared into his deep, green eyes as my palms rested on his hard biceps for support. Lord, he smelled good, like the forest after rain.

My breath hitched.

About the author:
Veronica Blade

Veronica Blade lives in Southern California with her husband and children. By day she runs the family business, but each night she slips away to spin her tales. She writes stories about young adults to relive her own childhood and to live vicariously through her characters. Except her heroes and heroines lead far more interesting lives — and they are always way hotter.

1) When did the writing bug hit and why did you decide to write for the YA market?
I’d always wanted to write a novel but never felt I had anything unique to offer — until one day several years ago I got this AMAZING idea. I went right to it, pounding out the words. Two months later, I’d finished the first draft of my masterpiece — a 100K word/400+ page adult vampire novel. Eventually, I discovered that not only was it most decidedly far less original than any vampire novel in existence, but I couldn’t write worth a damn. I’d already tasted the rush of writing, though, and had to find a way to justify spending so much time doing it. I was absolutely determined to learn how to write a great novel. And so I did!

As to writing for the YA market, I didn’t read much as a kid and even less as a teen. I didn’t even know YA existed as a genre until I discovered Twilight. Once I tasted YA though, I was in love! It’s pretty much all I read or write. Totally hooked!

2) With New Adult gaining popularity and your books are heavy on the romance, have you thought about branching out into this market?
From Fame to Shame has an 18 year old heroine and her love interest is a little older, which still works for YA, but also skirts the edges of New Adult. From Couture to Cut-offs, the sequel for From Fame to Shame, is definitely more NA than YA. But that’s up the road, to be squeezed in between wolves and shape-shifters.

3) Tell us about MY WOLF'S BANE. What was the spark? Which character or situation spoke to you first?
Autumn spoke to me first. When I was writing My Wolf’s Bane, I’d recently read several books where the heroines were super wimpy. I didn’t want that for her — or me! I like Autumn because she’s still innocent and a tiny bit shy, but she won’t let a guy walk all over her.

4) What are you working on now? What up next for the Shapes of Autumn series? How long do you envision the series to be?
I’m working on Wolves at the Door, the sequel to My Wolf’s Bane. After that, there will be at least 4 more books. The series is set up to go on indefinitely, but whether I continue beyond book six depends on the fans, really. If they want more, I’ll do my best!

5) What are your thoughts on publishing today?
I couldn’t be happier with the direction the publishing world is taking. Authors have the upper hand in so many ways, for the first time in history. We can decline a crappy offer from a publisher and do it all ourselves.

6) Is it harder to be an author today than in the past?
Only in the respect that there are soooo many books out there and so much competition. I think competition is healthy though. It makes us strive to do better.

7) When do you write? Where?
I like to be comfortable — in bed wearing sweats. Very glamorous!

8) Why are you such a romantic?
Because I’m married! LOL I’m very happy with my hubs and plan to keep him forever. But there’s nothing like falling in love and that first kiss with the guy of your dreams. As a married woman, I will never get that again. But through books, whether writing or reading for pleasure, I can get that feeling over and over without cheating on my hubs.
