Clayton Falls Blog Tour: review

A small North Carolina town where everyone knows everyone. Where one can watch the sunrise over the ocean waves. And where one young woman ventures to deal with something in her life and find a chance at love. These are the romantic stories about women finding love in Clayton Falls, a new series by Alyssa Rose Ivy. In Derailed, we meet Molly (my review) and in Veer, it's Becca turn (my review is below). I've read both books and can say this series is addictive. We are today's stop on the Clayton Falls Blog Tour, hosted by Xpresso Book Tours. Welcome.

Only when you let go can you learn to live.

Between the death of her mother and pushing through law school without her best friend, it's been a tough year for Becca. Needing a break from Boston, she moves to a tiny coastal North Carolina town for a relaxing summer. After bumping heads repeatedly with a local cop, she realizes her summer will be anything but quiet.

Three years after a career ending injury ruins his chance to play Major League Baseball, Gavin has a distrust of northerners and lately girls in general. He wants nothing to do with a girl who is only in town for the summer.

When the two give in to their impossible attraction, they realize that they may just have found the key to freeing themselves from the ghosts of their pasts.

Alyssa Rose Ivy is a Young Adult and New Adult author who loves to weave stories with romance and a southern setting. Although raised in the New York area, she fell in love with the South after moving to New Orleans for college. After years as a perpetual student, she turned back to her creative side and decided to write. She lives in North Carolina with her husband and two young children, and she can usually be found with a cup of coffee in her hand.

My thoughts:
I thoroughly enjoyed Derailed, the first book in Alyssa Rose Ivy's Clayton Falls series. Reading about high school sweethearts Molly and Ben reconnecting after time apart was sweet, romantic and fun. Veer is the story about Molly's roommate from law school, Becca, who comes to the small North Carolina town for the summer. Fully aware her friend needs a change of scenery, Molly has procured a job for her friend in the town's law office.

Since I read the first book, I've already met town cop Gavin and Ben's younger brother, Jake. Both characters seemed changed in the beginning of this story. Jake used to be a total jerk, always arguing with Molly, but here he wants to become Becca's friend and Gavin starts off the story annoying. He's rude to Becca and seems out of character. Becca herself is a harder character to like, unlike Molly whom I instantly liked. The story itself  was a bit slow, and predictable, until Becca and Gavin's relationship actually heats up and they begin spending more time together. At this point I appreciated their dual points-of-view moving the story along. We see regulars from Derailed here and meet some new characters. I enjoyed reading Becca's trip to Georgia to meet Gavin's family for his parents' 45th anniversary party.

From the party scene on I became a fan of this couple. Watching Gavin in his environment and Becca witnessing how a big family acts was touching. What happened afterwards wasn't surprising but I did like the baseball connection. I've read quite a few books by Alyssa Rose Ivy, ranging from YA paranormal to New Adult contemporary, and she can write romantic scenes. The ending scene had me smiling, reveling in this HEA. I was expecting an Epilogue (like in Derailed so I could find out if they do marry), but then I wonder who will have a story in book 3? Hopefully, Jake, he needs a girlfriend to spend time with along with all the happy couples of Clayton Falls.

Veer is the second book in a fun, fast romantic series set in the idyllic setting of Clayton Falls.

Rating: 3.5

Cover comment: Reminds me of a scene from the book, except the water is too close to the windows. Gavin lives in a beachfront condo loft with water views but this cover makes it appear he's on a houseboat or something (lol).

Book source: I received a promotional copy from the author in return for my honest review.

  1. Thanks for reading and reviewing Veer! Book 3, Wrecked, is Jake's story. :)
