Nancy was born in Sioux City Iowa, left the cold of the Midwest in 1991 and only returns to see family in the summer time. She spent ten years traveling the world as a US Marine and settled in rural SC. She has two fantastic son, three rotten dogs and an amazing husband. When not writing she enjoys RVing with her family, swimming and reading all types of romance genres. Her favorite is paranormal romance.
When did you know you wanted to be a writer? Unfortunately, I didn’t know I wanted to write until about three years ago. I wish I’d have known much earlier! My first book, Meeting Destiny, I wrote just to see if I could actually write a book. I didn’t have any aspirations of ever publishing it, I wrote it for me. Weird, right? When it was done, I sent it to a close friend and she’s the one who convinced me to publish it. I can tell you the specific day I decided I wanted to be a writer and it was well after I decided to publish Meeting Destiny.
I had just joined Goodreads. I think I had sold maybe twenty-five books. I was still very new to the site and I was surprised when a friend request came in from Charles Young. This was followed by a message saying he had read Meeting Destiny and loved it. Charles was my very first fan and I still message him regularly. If any of you have ever sent a message like the one I received from Charles to a “Rookie” author, I can guarantee you will never comprehend the lifelong impact your simple act of kindness has made (or will make) in that author’s life! Since that day, I’ve met many readers who have gone out of their way to brighten my day – every single message has been an inspiration. Charles, if you’re reading this blog post, thank you, again.
How would you classify Blood Debt? Blood Debt’s genre is Paranormal Romance or Mythological Romance. Sometimes my books get labeled as Young Adult. There’s nothing explicit in my writing that precludes a younger audience, but my characters are all adults, living adult lives, faced with adult decisions.
Do you have any favorite characters or scenes from Blood Debt? I LOVE the yacht scene!! Daniel reminds me of a very good friend I had when I was younger so I enjoy writing his character. Camille’s personality is the culmination of about five of my closest girlfriends: all are very independent, smart, strong women. And Drake? Okay, I’ll say it, I LOVE Drake!
Did any characters or story lines change as you wrote the book? I have a vague outline when I begin and I rarely follow it. I wait until the characters find their voices and let them tell the story.
How do you go about your story building? Why did you pick Centaurs? The characters build the story, I just make sure enough things happen to them along the way to keep the story interesting. As far as Centaurs, I was looking for something different. Don’t get me wrong, I love reading in the Paranormal Romance genre about: Angels, Demons, Fairies, Magical Creatures, Werewolves, Shape-shifters, etc., but I wanted to write a series that would be unique, different from most of the other choices out there. Mythology had always been interesting to me and I thought others might enjoy a modern spin on Centaurs.
Can you give us any hints about what we can expect to see in Cami’s second book and how long is the series going to be? Hmmm, hints? Centaur Legacy was released on Nov 15 so I’ll just say that I don’t think anyone will be disappointed. Cami and Drake are put through the wringer again, but this time, they’re together. My outline shows four books but the way everyone has responded to Drake and Cami I’ll see if they have more of a story to tell after the fourth is written.
What has your journey to publication been like? I’m proudly self-published, so the barriers carefully constructed to keep authors out were not even a speed bump for me. I’ve done remarkably little marketing and I’ve been blessed by kind-hearted readers who have recommended my books to their friends. Before we finish the interview, I want to tell everyone reading this how much of an impact you (Laurie), and other bloggers like you, have had for me and my journey. You are the unsung heroes in the indie world, willing to take a chance on an unknown author, devoting hours of your life to reading and reviewing, then broadcasting your opinion to the world. “Thank you,” isn’t adequate; sometimes I wish there were better English words, something like: OHMYSWEETGOODNESSILOVEYOU!
