For more than five years, my dad was the cowboss on a large cattle ranch, in charge of more than 350 cows and calves. To my immense delight, I got to help him.

Moving the cattle to the summer range was my favorite event. Starting at the ranch, we would gather around 200 cow/calf pairs in the ranch pastures and take them to the high range. I’m a writer, but I can’t describe the feeling of riding a good horse and working cowdogs. The sun gets hot, even in May. I’m fair skinned and I would finish the day beet red, no matter how much sunscreen I applied. My throat would get raw from yelling at the cattle and calling the dogs over the cows’ bawling. And the dust, mountains of it. Two, three showers to get it all off. But the satisfaction of seeing those black Angus spread over that green grass made it all worth it.

I wouldn’t trade a minute of it.

This is the same life Cordero Ybarra loves and doesn’t want to give up. Like me, he loves cattle, good horses and the artistry of working ropers. He is a saddle bum, not owning much more than a couple of horses, a beat-up truck and a real good saddle. When his boss dies, and leaves him half a ranch, with the stipulation he has to live with a woman he doesn’t know, or want to know, Cord is torn.

Agree, and get to live the life he loves? Or, turn away and lose it all?

Falling in love with romance novels the summer before sixth grade, D’Ann Lindun never thought about writing one until many years later when she took a how-to class at her local college. She was hooked! She began writing and never looked back. Romance appeals to her because there's just something so satisfying about writing a book guaranteed to have a happy ending. D’Ann’s particular favorites usually feature cowboys and the women who love them. This is probably because she draws inspiration from the area where she lives, Western Colorado, her husband of twenty-nine years and their daughter.
