Pavarti K Tyler

Pavarti K Tyler is an artist, wife, mother and number cruncher. She graduated Smith College in 1999 with a degree in Theatre. After graduation, she moved to New York, where she worked as a Dramaturge, Assistant Director and Production Manager on productions both on and off Broadway.

Later, Pavarti went to work in the finance industry as a freelance accountant for several international law firms. She now operates her own accounting firm in the Washington DC area, where she lives with her husband, two daughters and two terrible dogs. When not preparing taxes, she is busy penning her next novel.

Author of many short stories, Pavarti spans genres from Horror and Erotica all the way to Fantasy. Currently Pavarti is hard at work preparing for the release of her upcoming novel Shadow on the Wall, a Muslim Superhero Literary Fiction.

Review:

Consumed By Love is a dark, twisted short tale of love and madness. Not for the faint of heart, it reads like a character study, a vignette of a couple as they descend into a downward spiral which consumes them both. Do not expect a HEA here. Author Pavarti K Tyler offers us a glimpse into the tumultuous mind of Hugo, distraught after his father's death. His dad was chief of the Abenaki tribe, a group Hugo left in his teens and has been holding his guilt over for years. This tall, strong man suddenly begins to unravel, losing more of himself day by day as a miasma of things--guilt, desperation and more--begin to transfer him into a 'demon' of sorts.

Bree is his wife, steadfast and true, and it is apparent she loves her husband deeply. But what happens when the line between love and obsession blur? Her love for Hugo blinds her to what he is becoming, despite her reaching out to his family, his sister whom she contacts seeking advice. When she receives guidance and is told what she must do, Bree realizes Hugo will not return home for help. Her actions decide her fate as she sees a glimmer of the man she loves return when he gets an accidental taste of her blood. 

Love, sex, abandonment of self, consumption of another, Consumed By Love was disturbing, especially in the sections when we 'see' into Hugo's warped mind. As he turns into a monster, a symbolic vampire/zombie, and a ghost of the man he was, his wife becomes his enabler as she tries to hold onto what remains of her true love, her marriage, and her life. Because of the story's length and brevity, I would have liked a little more background into this couple's life to help me understand and sympathize with their plight, as well as more into the Abenaki  ways. For a short story, the author's words and visualizations wrangle their ways into the reader's mind and can have an emotional effect on one.
