Author Sherry Gammon has been writing for several years. Her work has been in several newspapers, and an educational Magazine. She and her husband,along with their children and a couple of crazy dogs, call Upstate New York home.
Her first novel, Unlovable, Book One of the Port Fare series, is in the top 100 of Amazon's Best Seller's teens list, and she recently released a short story titled Pete & Tink.
Review:
Heart break. Heart ache. Desperation. Sadness. Laughter. Souls in Peril takes its' reader on a rollercoaster ride which runs the gamut of feelings. I'm still speechless. The popular kid in school gets the opportunity to see what the most unpopular kid has to deal with being bullied by students and then by his father at home. Max, the athlete, steps into the shoes of JD, the overweight kid with a troublesome home life.
This is the kind of book I do not want to spoil for anyone who hasn't had the chance to read it. What I will say is reading this I did feel like Souls in Peril reminded me of movies like 17 Again and Freaky Friday but with a serious subject matter. I liked Max's girlfriend, Emma, and appreciated her being a strong girl with her own mind and being honest and outspoken. I wasn't always a fan of Max's but after he is faced with his situation, as he changed, so did my opinion of him. JD and his friend Izzy were the two who captured my heart. Someone, please make a movie out of this book!
I applaud Sherry Gammon for taking a timely topic and adding her own unique spin to it, while never wavering from the seriousness of the topic of bullying. She shows us both points-of-view: the one doing the bullying and the one enduring it.
Perhaps English/Language Arts teachers in middle schools and high schools across the country could read this book and add it to their curriculum. The message of Souls in Peril is powerful, moving and uplifting. Highly recommended.

Cover comment: I may not be a fan of the font but the image of the boy with the taped-up mouth is so powerful I forget about the typeface. I just want to know what this book is about.

Sounds like a good read. I like the idea of the popular kid having to experience the world of the bullied outcasts. It's sad that even in school such hierarchies are formed.
