Subversive Book Tour: guest post, review, giveaway

We are thrilled to be welcoming back author Rebecca Royce to our blog today. She has penned one of our favorite YA series, The Warrior, of which we review books two, Driven, and three, Subversive. The author is also having a giveaway--details are below. We welcome Rebecca Royce.

Guest post topic: Hi Rebecca! You have written so many adult books and one YA series. What is your secret? What is a typical day for you and do you plan on writing any more YA and why/not? Thank you. 

What is my secret? Wow, I wish I had one. A typical day goes like this: I get up, get dressed, get the kids dressed and out the door for school. They’re not yet in the same school because the little one still goes to nursery school. I drop them off and come back home.

With whatever time I have left, whether that be just a few hours because my two year old doesn’t stay full day every day or the rest of the afternoon until school lets out at 3, I run errands. A few days a week I have to temper this with errands but mostly I just write.

The trick here is to make writing the priority. If I want it to be my job, I treat it as such and writing can’t be something I do just because I have long length of time to do it. If I have an hour, I write for an hour.

Yes, I plan to write more YA. Two more in this series and then another one I have stewing in the back of my mind.

About the author: As a teenager, Rebecca Royce would hide in her room to read her favorite romance novels when she was supposed to be doing her homework. She hopes, these days, that her parents think it was well worth it. 

Rebecca is the mother of three adorable boys and is fortunate to be married to her best friend. They live in northern New Jersey and try not to freeze too badly during the winter months. 

She's in love with science fiction, fantasy, and the paranormal and tries to use all of these elements in her writing. She's been told she's a little bloodthirsty so she hopes that when you read her work you'll enjoy the action packed ride that always ends in romance. Rebecca loves to write series because she loves to see characters develop over time and it always makes her happy to see her favorite characters make guest appearances in other books. 

In Rebecca Royce's world anything is possible, anything can happen, and you should suspect that it will.  

Review: As I stated in my review of the first book of The Warrior series, Initiation, I really enjoyed the story (my review). Rachel's story continues in book two, Driven. When the book opens, it's six months after the events of the first book. Rachel is nursing a broken heart but has decided to move on, with her best friend Tia's brother, Chad. He provides the safety she so yearns for but since this is a Rebecca Royce novel, happy moments are fleeting in this gritty, futuristic world. Physically and mentally scarred from her vampire attack, Rachel is surprised any guy would be interested in her and they are. Chad and Deacon are complete opposites and both care for her. As her talent for feeling vampires alerts her to danger, she tells the heads of the Genesis above ground tent complex something is coming. Assigned to travel by SUV to Liberty with Chad, our heroine is resigned to bring back help for the impending fight. But along the way, those nasty creatures and some new ones, interfere, dragging Rachel into another set of problems and encounters with horrific vampires and werewolves.

It's great to see strong female leads in YA. Like Katniss, Rachel is tough, quick thinking and dedicated to her cause. At sixteen she has already experienced heart break and wants to give up on happy endings until Chad makes a certain declaration of affection to her. As she drops her guard, again, fate has other plans for her. Plans which lead Rachel to fight for her life once again.

Fast paced, tense, and featuring vile vampires and a tough new world,  Driven shows us a young girl in flux. Broken down, attacked, and caged, Rachel still has a fierce determination to destroy the creatures that have ruined the world for humans. Stepping up into an important role, we watch a young girl become a woman of integrity and strong character. This same character is evident in Subversive, with some much added anger. Rachel has endured so much during her travels as a level one warrior, both with her job and in love, she now harbors an incredible amount of anger. After losing one love, she watches the other love leave to deal with his family problems, while the demands of saving her race drive her into a new position of leadership. Surprise twists and turns keep the eyes of reader riveted to each page in this engrossing dystopian race of survival. Highly recommended.
