Review: This is the first book I have read by Vincent Zandri. Permanence was a disturbing, interesting, and engrossing read. At times lyrical, other times psychologically unhinged and distant, the fast pace surprised me and helped suck me into Mary Kismet's strange world. The twenty-nine year old is seeing a psychologist after she was responsible for the accidental drowning death of her two year old toddler son. Distraught, unhinged, and a distrustful narrator, Mary's views seemed at times as though she was viewing life from a fishbowl. She doesn't refer to her child by name, only refers to him as 'baby.' A hard character to pin down, she is a walking contradiction at times, especially when it comes to her doctor who happens to be her lover. Her own husband, Jamie, supposedly left her after their son's death and Mary is scrapping by day by day. 

Besides being an intense character study, this is an insightful mystery with very dark overtones. Don't get me wrong, this is not a happy story and Mary is not the typical heroine readers root for. Despite her flaws, problems, and scarring from her own childhood horror when her father tried to burn her and her mother alive inside their family house, I was uncomfortable, yet oddly fascinated by her plight and subsequent unraveling. Author Vincent Zandri did get the last laugh though by his surprise ending which I did not see coming. I suspected something was coming and when it did, I was shocked.

Guilt, shock, secrets, and the thin line between love and obsession, this novel touched upon powerful, tense complexities of life and the human psyche. When Mary accompanies her doctor to Venice, the novel took an interesting turn. With a deft hand, Zandri created an intriguing story with an equally intriguing premise. I still can't shake the effects of Permamence off long after I finished reading it and isn't that waht authors want, staying power for their characters? I don't think I'll be forgetting Mary Kismet for a long time.

Rating: 4**** Intense and couldn't stop reading.
