An Interview with Brenda Dyer

RG: Why did you decide to self-publish? How has your experience been so far?

I decided to self publish before I sent out any queries. LOL, I know that doesn't make any sense so I'll explain. After I finished the tenth draft of Love's Prophecy--not an exaggeration--I had made the decision not to query agents. To be represented by an agent and to be published by one of the big six was my dream, but due to many, many changes in the publishing industry and how hard it had become to get an agent and to be published through one of the B-6, my dream changed. Around this time I had been hearing a ton about self publishing. I read article after article and I became obsessed with finding out all I could on the subject. Self publishing seemed like the route I wanted to take. Friends of mine suggested I try going through e-publishers. I listened and polished my query and my synopsis and made a list of e-publishers, then began querying. I did a half arsed job of it because my mind was still set on self pubbing. After I sent out five queries I sat back and waited. I received one rejection right away and then didn't hear a word from the others. After the allotted wait time, I then went ahead with my original plan to self pub.

My experience so far has been eye-opening.

RG: The reviews for Love's Prophecy have been stellar. Readers remark about the story having a "heart" and being a real romance. Can you share with us what you like best in romance novels, especially paranormal tales? 

First, I would like to thank everyone one who has read Love's Prophecy. And those who left me a review and let me know your thoughts, I appreciate it so much.

What I enjoy most about romance novels is the deep love between the characters. Years ago, romance novels really played up the emotional journey of the characters, but lately I have noticed a shift and romances have sort of lost some of the "romance" and now focuses more on the external conflicts and not so much the internal ones. I prefer character driven stories.

As for what I like best about paranormal tales, it's the danger factor. Dealing with a vampire, werewolf, shape shifter or demon is risky business, lol. Also, they don't always live by the same set of rules we do. They are primal--and they love for life!

RG: I have read your vampires are different from the others on the market. Can you tell us about your supernatural creatures and how they came about?

What sets my supernatural creatures a part from most is how they came to be and why they are here. Their creation and history is directly involved with ours. At one time, vampires and humans co-existed peacefully. In fact, they relied on each other for survival. But that all changed when demons...I won't give it away.

Another factor that makes my supernatural creatures different is I don't stick to what most believe about vampires. I would love nothing more than to give details, but I don't want to give anything away, LOL.

RG: What do you find appealing about heroes/heroines in general and was it important to include these attributes in your own characters?

What I find the most appealing about heroes and heroines is how deeply they love one another. As for physical attributes, I like the hero to be tall, dark and handsome, lol as cliché as that is. I like him to have a strong, confident personality, but also to have flaws and fears. I also need the hero to be vulnerable and show his softer side to the heroine. I want him larger than life, but not unbelievable, lol.

As for the heroine, I like her to be pretty--she doesn't have to be beautiful--and confident in herself as a person. I like her to be able to take care of herself. She needs to have strength of character, but she doesn't have to be an ass-kicker. In fact, I prefer it if she isn't.

It was very important I include these characteristics in my own characters. If I couldn't respect and like my characters then I couldn't expect others to.

RG: Will this be a series and how do you see happening in the other titles?

Yes, this will definitely be a series, but with each book, the main characters change, but the backbone stays the same throughout. In Love's Prophecy, the story is centered around Mel and Breeana, but the reader is introduced to Kal--he will be the hero of book 2, Prophecy's Child. Book three, Prophecy's Power, is Soren's story. I'm planning eight initial books to this series and then three books will come in the future to bring the big finish to this series. 

RG: Which character(s) were your favorites? Were any difficult to write? 

Hands down, Mel was my favorite character, but he wasn't easy to write. I really connected to him. Actually, he wore me down with his deep emotional scars. Sometimes when I'd write in his point of view, I'd end up with a splitting headache. 

Now Kal and I share a deep bond, LOL. Out of all my characters, Kal and I have the most in common--personality wise. 

Breeana was harder for me to write for some reason. I took specific character traits from friends of mine to create Breeana. LOL, to me I made the perfect friend. I could see myself hanging out with her.
