Destiny's Fire ARC Tour (A Tale of Many Reviews)
As the Narcolym airships approach, Dez and her friends rebel against their Council and secretly train for battle. Not only is Dez wary of war and her growing affection for her best friend Jace, but she fears the change her birthday will bring. When Dez’s newfound power rockets out of control, it’s a Narcolym who could change her fate… if she can trust him.
Dez’s guarded world crumbles when she discovers why the Narcos have really come to Haven Falls, and she's forced to choose between the race who raised her and the enemy she's feared her whole life.
Our review: Steampunk is a genre I have really wanted to delve into and I'm glad I began with Destiny's Fire. The story was certainly a trip worth taking. Trisha Wolfe painted a futuristic world complete with airships, varying mechanical contraptions and magic. Except the magic here is created by a different race, the Shythe, and they keep it a secret from the humans. The Narcolyms, another group of magical beings, detest the Shythe and there is a long history of warring between them. When their airships fill the sky our feisty heroine, Dez, along with her triplet best friends (isn't that a cool idea?) hate the idea. I liked Dez a lot, she was tough and caring, anxiously awaiting her birthday for her powers to kick in so she could become a complete kick ass. Jace was another favorite character of mine and Reese too. Actually, I wound up liking all of the characters and their new world and conflicts.
I did feel a bit lost in the beginning and the author pulled me in with her vivid descriptions and realistic dialogue. Destiny's Fire is an impressive debut novel and Tricia Wolfe is an author to certainly take note of. A cool steampunk world, an unconventional love triangle, true friendships, and tons of action are just some of the things you'll find in this fast-paced, well plotted YA fantasy even adults would enjoy.
About the author: Trisha Wolfe is an avid reader and writer of Young Adult fiction. Her debut novel DESTINY'S FIRE will be published by Omnific Publishing in early 2012. Her short stories have appeared in Young Adult literary journals and fantasy magazines.
She's a proud member and co-founder of Kappa Delta Writer for up and coming YA authors, and a member of the SCWW and YALITCHAT.ORG

It was a really interesting book! At first, I was kind of lost as well, but that's probably because everything was so new to me. But I got hooked somewhere in the third or fourth chapter and I just tore through it ;)
ReplyDeleteI need to put this on my TBR pile as I do love Steampunk. Great review!
