Book review: Midnight Rising (Midnight Breed, #4) by Lara Adrian

My review: Whew! I can finally say I am all caught up with the Midnight Breed series as I anxiously await this month's release of Darker After Midnight. And I'm so glad I read book number four--this became one of my very favorites in this long running series. I had an instant connection to Dylan with her journalism background (and mine) and found her immensely likable. What can I say about Rio? Dangerous, bitter, mysterious, wounded, scarred. He is a broken man (well, vampire) seeking an end to his troubles inside a cave he is supposed to blow up for his Breed warrior family.
I would not have thought to give Rio his own story so soon after his Breedmate Eva's betrayal and death in the first book, but in Adrian's capable hands, she crafted an incredible story I had to finish the day I began it. The slow, curious beginning certainly drew me into Dylan's hike in the woods during a trip. Her love for her sick mother was heartfelt and when she is drawn back to the cave, not just because of its potential for a news story but for the presence there, I cheered her along.
Rio is one of those characters I instantly fall for--one seeking a quick end when what he truly needs is redemption. I always enjoy the switch of point of views from male to female in the Midnight Breed series. Hearing both sides gives me a full picture of the paranormal world I get lost in time after time. It's amazing Lara Adrian can pull it off each go around with another incredible tale of good fighting evil, personal journeys, lots of action and sexy romance. I especially liked the climatic scene taking place in Westchester County, NY, a place I know so well.
There are only a handful of books I will drop everything for and the Midnight Breed series has certainly jumped to the top of my list. If this book is a testament to the longevity of the Breed warrior saga, I don't foresee this series losing any steam in the future.
Rating: I loved it.
Favorite excerpt: "Another man--be he Breed or human--would be much better suited to care for a woman like Dylan. It would be another man's privilege to explore her soft curves and silky skin. Another man's pleasure to taste the delicate pulse that beat in the sweet hollow at the base of her throat. Only another Breed male should have the honor of piercing Dylan's veins with a tender, wholly relevant bite.
It would be the solemn vow of another--never him--to protect her from all harms and to sustain her faithfully and forever with the blood and strength of his immortal body.
Not his right at all, Rio thought grimly as he placed the blanket over her as lightly as he could. Not one damn bit of her was his to desire.
But yet he did.
God, did he ever."
Cover comment: Similar to others in the series, I would have liked a glimpse of Rio's scarred face instead of the smooth cheeked model depicted on the cover. These men are supposed to be warriors! I don't see that here.
