Hi everyone. First off, I have to thank you so much for including me in the ReaderGirls blog. What a thrill. In Her Sights is my debut romantic suspense novel, and it's so exciting to share a bit about the story.
High-tech weaponry and high-tech gadgetry play a part in most of my novels, partly because I work at an advanced technology corporation, but mostly because I've always loved science and math. You guessed it. I'm a certified—not certifiable—geek!
It all started with my fifth grade teacher, Mr. Redmond. He was an amazing man, though I didn't realize it until later. Entering his classroom wasn't like entering any others. He had a partition set up, block off probably five feet of the room. On the side facing the students, he tacked up prints of famous works of art. I learned to recognize Degas, Monet, Manet, Rembrandt, Van Gogh as well as learned their stories. But, behind the partition—that was his secret science laboratory. All sorts of strange and mysterious jars full of strange and mysterious things. From that moment on I was hooked on science!
So, I majored in chemistry in college and earned a Masters with a concentration in Management of Technology. I'm the one my family call when the blue-screen-of-death appears or the printer won't work or the IPad flakes out or the image on the monitor turns upside down when a three-year-old punches an odd sequence of keys.
I'm a life-long learner, much thanks to Mr. Redmond—and many other amazing teachers I had over the years. My life is on the cutting edge of technology. Why not my books?
When I decided to write a novel about a SWAT Team sniper, Jazz Parker. I needed to know how her weapons worked, because while her emotional motivation is a critical element of my story, I wanted to get deep inside her head. How does she use her technology to do her job, to protect her team? And if she's the best, how could I use that knowledge during the course of the story to force her to face her greatest fear? I wanted to not only understand how the weapons worked, I wanted to know how to break them!
Mr. Redmond created a scientist when he pulled those strange and unusual jars from behind the partition in my fifth grade classroom. He also created a writer whose love of the analytical hopefully makes the puzzles in her stories intriguing enough that readers will want to come back for more.

ReplyDeleteTeachers are amazing. I was thinking one of my other memories was in junior high school where the teacher gave us 'writing' time in a journal. That may be when I started my first book.
