The Belle Stalker Book Tour: Author guest post & giveaway

THE BELLE STALKER
An Urban Fantasy Thriller
by Minnette Meador

Book blurb: The police have done all they can, but it isn’t enough. When Belle finds the mutilated body of her lover strewn across the furniture she knows only her ex-husband, Homicide Detective Mike Cranston can stop the maniac who has been dogging her steps for over a year. The only problem is the man who stalks her...is not a man at all. Belle plays a dangerous game and only hopes that Cranston can stop the monster before it’s too late.

Guest Post: GENRE BENDING
When they opened the double swinging doors, the victim’s body lay there in all its sterile glory, opened like a grisly butterfly on a cold stainless steel table. Doc Thurman, immaculate as ever in a pristine white coat, spared them one quick eye then went back to her recorder to dictate in a few more words.

“Detectives,” she said coolly.

The body appeared pretty much as it did in the apartment, with two notable exceptions: His chest lay open to expose a stark white ribcage and brightly colored yellow, white, red and brown organs, and the victim’s eyes were an unusual shade of pale blue Cranston had never seen on another human being. He frowned at Tami.

“His eyes were brown on the scene.”

Tami nodded. “Contacts. I removed them.”

“This guy isn’t right, is he?”

Tami raised one narrow brow and put on the glasses hanging around her neck. With a delighted glint in her eye that only a coroner could get from a dead body, her lips squirmed maniacally. “You have no idea.”

TODAY’S PRIZE: RECIPE BOX WITH MY FAVORITE RECIPES

I get asked a lot about why I like to mix genres and bend, if not break some of the traditional rules about writing genre romance. The simple answer is this: it’s like gourmet cooking. It’s not the ingredients it’s the combination of ingredients that makes the difference. I took a clue from a couple of guys who are very good a mixing genres; George Lucas and Josh Whedan. George’s Star Wars was a mix of western, space opera, the hero’s journey, sci-fi, romance, swashbuckler and fantasy. If you doubt that, watch it again; it has every one of those genres in it and then some. Whedan’s Firefly is a beautiful example of sci-fi, western, pioneer, suspense, pirate, and psychological thriller. There’s even sex, deception, and herding cows! Again, they both hit that perfect balance of ingredients with just the right spice, like a gourmet cook.

The Belle Stalker is no different, though whether I hit the right ingredients with the right balance would be for you to decide. It is murder mystery, thriller, paranormal, romance, police drama, urban fantasy, and even a little travelogue! You will meet homicide detectives, dwarves, the homeless, professors, huntsmen, Napoleon, city workers, soldiers, pilots, Romans, and the Irish, not necessarily in that order. I’ve always loved books and stories that have wonderful twists and turns you never see coming; some of my favorites are Sixth Sense, Momento, Identity and Source Code. If you haven’t seen these wonderful movies, I highly recommend them. I love a good twist and I try to do that in my own stories. There is nothing so thrilling as reading a story you are certain you already figured out and didn’t see coming!

So what are some of your favorite mixed genre books? What genres do you like to read together? Don’t forget to leave a comment for a chance at today’s prize and the grand prizes at the end of the tour. Minnette :o)

  1. I love reading these little snippets from the book. I have visited a few stops on the tour and it has convinced me to add the Belle Stalker to my wish list.

As to favorite mixed genres, I am actually a Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Cowboys and Aliens, Brico County Jr kind of gal. You can smash together historical and fantasy, space and romance, or whatever you'd like and I'd read it.

    Thanks for the tour posting!

  2. I actually find that most books are a mix of genres, some perhaps more subtle than others. I happen to love Historical, so throw that into the mix & I am always happy.

  5. Sounds like a great book. (I haven't started reading my copy yet.)

I once heard someone say "MAKE me believe it. I'll read anything as long as it's well-written." I agree with this statement.

I like a mix of genres, too, though I'd have to say mysteries and especially cozy mystreries are my all-time faves.

  6. That little tidbit today is really a WOW moment! Gotta get this book....repeat...gotta get this book.

In reality, I don't necessarily read mixed genre books. I'm pretty set in my historical romances (regency & victorian) or a mystery or suspense or thriller or any combination thereof.

That said, I loved the Star Wars films...all of them and Indiana Jones and other films that fall into the mixed genre catagory. I think I watch the film better than I read the book.

  8. Thanks, Sophia! I hope you like it... I LOVED Cowboys & Aliens! We saw it twice, which I never do.

I think you're right, Marybelle... Kind of like life, huh?

    Hi, Royal! Me too...

    Thanks, MomJane!

I'm a sucker for cozy mysteries myself, Laura. One of my favorite genres.

Thanks, Karen... it's part of one of my favorite scenes in The Belle Stalker. I'm a huge history buff myself and I try to build some history in all my books. This one hits on some ancient history of Wales and was really fund to research.

  10. Another awesome excerpt. I hope I get book money for Christmas, so I don't have to wait for my book budget to build up enough to buy all the books I want, which could take years. lol

    Recipes are good too!!

I love sci-fi, time travel & shifters by themselves, or mixed all up together. Actually, I'll read just about any combination a writer can think up.

  11. I love the book, as you well know Minnette. You do an excellent job of mixing everything together.

I think my taste sorta twist sometimes. I like scifi and fantasy stuff, mystery fantasy, scifi/fantasy/mystery/romance, paranormal/fantasy/romance, thriller/romance, even urban thriller, i guess you could mix them all together if they are written well. Oh! And humor, though I don't know a catagory for that one lol. My range of books very but the majority of it I think is either paranormal, scifi, fantasy, mystery, and romance according to the 'major' players out there.

  12. Hi Minnette!

I mentioned in a previous post that I, too, am a huge Joss Whedon fan and I love Firefly. Love Nathan Fillion. I also love Inara, the Companion character. She would make for a great central character in an erotic fiction series.

If you get a chance to see Dr. Horrible's Sing Along (written by Whedon), I highly recommend it. You can see it online. We had a local theater production of it here and it's riotous fun!

    Cheers,

PS...Recipes would be a lost cause for me. I don't spend much tome in the kitchen...We eat out a lot! LOL!

  14. I love reading books that bend genres a bit -- might be why I've recently become a steampunk fan: historical meets science fiction meets paranormal and how cool is that?

Following your tour and reading the little tastes you've given us have really whet my appetite for the book!
