An interview with Katy Madison:

Have any of the books you read as a child influenced you as a writer?

Undoubtedly. With two older sisters I had over a hundred Nancy Drew novels, all the Little House books and many of the other classics, not to mention I checked out all the library books that I was allowed every week. I read a lot as a child, I read so many books that my mother ran out of age-appropriate books to feed my addiction. Probably out of frustration, she handed me a romance novel when I was in third grade. I was hooked. Pretty quickly after my mother turned me on to romances I found her hidden stash and started raiding it. I read Phyllis Whitney, Victoria Holt, and Mary Stewart early on, which probably contributes to my love of Gothic Romance.

Why historical romance? What are your thoughts on the genre and the popularity of it? What is the appeal of historical romance to so many readers of different ages?

Historical is fun because the rules were different and interaction between men and women was so regulated. Nothing really is taboo in today’s world, so it is hard to tap into that lure of the forbidden. I also think historicals get away from people’s real world experiences, which might throw someone out of the book if what is relayed in the book doesn’t match up to what a reader has lived through, even when the fictional depiction is a valid one. None of us were alive in 1860 so a reader can’t compare to her own life experience. Plus the past in some ways just seems much grander and simpler. I think we like to look back and see historical periods as more romantic than they were and gloss over the gross parts.

Have you ever thought of writing outside of your genre?

I have and do. I have a contemporary romantic suspense novel out under the pen name K.T. Madison.

With regards to All About Seduction, which character was a delight to write? Were any problematic and if so, how did you work it out?

I’d have to say Jack was my favorite character to write. I always fall in love with my heroes. Caroline was more problematic, but I tend to have more trouble with the heroines. It took a little while for me to figure out who she was and make her strong, yet bound by the conventions of her upbringing and the rules of society.

Do you have a favorite scene in All About Seduction?

Probably the epilogue. But I actually like the scene on the stairs with Jack and Caroline because they’re both starting to let down their guard around each other.

If a movie was being made, who would you cast and why?

That’s a tough one. Because I tend to see my characters in my head and they don’t resemble models or actors, they just look like themselves to me, but I’ll give it a go. For Caroline, Lauren Graham’s got the right look or possibly Liv Tyler or Zooey Deshanel sans bangs. For Jack, possibly James McAvoy or Henry Cavill. For Mr. Broadhurst, my hands down favorite pick would be Clint Eastwood, because he’d be deliciously perfect, even sympathetic—in the beginning anyway.

About the author: Katy Madison has always loved stories. As a child she was always lugging a book around. At the age of eight, after having gone through over a hundred Nancy Drew mysteries, all the Laura Ingalls Wilder books—at least twice—and many others including her full weekly allotment of library books, Katy went to her mother and begged for a new book to read. Her frustrated mother handed her a romance novel. Katy fell in love with the romance genre. She quickly found where her mother hid the rest and began sneaking them out to read. She cut her eye teeth on books by Georgette Heyer and Mary Stewart, not to mention dozens of Barbara Cartland’s. With a nod to great Gothic novels like Jane Eyre and Rebecca, Katy offers up her gothic romance Tainted by Temptation.

Katy makes her home with her family and two cats on a tree-lined street in Kansas City. She thinks there is nothing better than a curling up in front of the fireplace and escaping with a good book while a storm rages outside.
