Is a stranger who stalks your stalker a friend or your worst enemy? Rachel Pendelton is determined to break from her small town past and stake out a new life for herself with a dream job in the big city. But hard work and determination are no match for whoever is working against her. When anonymous gifts show up, she’s flattered. When they appear in her locked apartment, she starts worrying. What can she do when everyone she turns to for help looks suspicious? What she doesn’t know is that a game has begun. A game with rules as baffling as they are deadly. A game that will pit her against the criminally insane. And only one can finish alive.

It’s an honor to have the chance to write a guest blog for Reader Girls. I am Maren Kaye, who, along with my talented writing partner, S.L. Pierce, have just published The Devil’s Game, a psychological thriller about a young woman’s brush with a deadly stalker. But with a twist: What if there was someone stalking your stalker? Would that person be your friend? Or your worst nightmare? Rachel, our main character, knows something is really wrong and is desperate to figure it out. But who can she trust?
Making sense of the world when you’re right out of college, particularly when it comes to dating, is already a daunting task. How do we know what we’re getting ourselves into when we meet a new guy? Unfortunately, they don’t come with references. Wouldn’t that be nice! How many of us are lucky enough to meet men who have lots of friends in common? And is that really enough to know what they’re like in private?
While doing research for The Devil’s Game, I was intrigued by the frightening nature of these people, how they are such masters of deception. Let’s be honest, we’ve all gone out with guys we really didn’t know much about. How many of us took an anxious look back at the guys we had dated in the past after we learned about Scott Peterson?
According to the experts, 1 out of 100 Americans are psychopaths. So chances are pretty good that we’ll meet a few in our lifetime. But, there are a few things we can look for, little red flags that should at least give us some cause to pause.
Is he the most charming and charismatic guy you know? Flag one. Do you catch him casually lying about things for no apparent reason? Flag two. Do you find shockingly over-the-top pornography in his closet? Flag three. Is everything bad that happens to him someone else’s fault? Flag four. Does he need to do crazy things to keep himself entertained? You’ve got enough red flags to open a used car lot! Anyone can have one or two of these characteristics, but the accumulation of all of the above should at least get you seriously wondering.
But if you’re still not sure, try getting him to tell you about his family. Not just superficial stories, but how he felt about this event or that encounter. If at the end, you find yourself wondering if he even knows how to feel, then maybe it’s time to get out. Have any of you been in this situation? I’d love to hear about how you were able to handle it, especially if you have some good advice for us about what to look out for. We ladies need to stick together!

Maren, this is a scary concept that I think every woman needs to know about. I work in the corrections field and I deal with men like this every single day. There are so many of them and they are so good at the game that it's terrifying if I stop to think about it. Thank you for writing such an important book!
ReplyDeleteSounds like a really interesting read. And Heather is right, an important topic. Definitely adding it to my TBR!
