The Office Ogre

Working in an office is quite the experience. I’ve done the retail bit, you know, working in the mall. I’ve worked at specialty stores and a well known department store. I’ve had those awkward moments when I had to tell someone their credit card was declined. If they were with someone I would usually say something like, “For some reason our machine doesn’t seem to be working right. Do you have another card?” or “We don’t accept this type of card. That’s probably why it’s not accepting it.”

Deciding that I wanted to try working in an office I signed up with a temp agency, told them that wherever they sent me had to be flexible because I was also going to school.

After working temp jobs in a few offices I began to notice patterns. There always seemed to be an Office Socialite, either a man or a woman. The Socialite would come in first thing in the morning and share their previous night’s activities. They would also be heavily involved with whatever was going on around the office.

There was the Social Butterfly, who would flit from cubicle to cubicle checking up with everyone. Take at least five minutes, usually with a cup of coffee in hand.

There was Oscar the grouch, who you just knew by some sort of survival instinct, not to approach for any reason before 10 AM for fear of some great bodily harm. Okay, maybe I’m being a bit dramatic here … maybe.

It seemed that most people would be open with me that they would fill me in on the office gossip, maybe it was because I was the temp.

There was one such office that I did temp work that had a truly interesting employee: The Office Ogre.

He had his own office and it seemed that he would rarely be seen outside of it. I sat near his office and I would see him come in the mornings, he would sometimes grumble a hello.

There would be times that he would bark at other employees and demand that they enter his office. His most direct use of contact and frequent … email. No one wanted to receive an email. They usually entailed an audience following an assignment that had end of the day deadlines.

One morning, instead of striding by my desk with his usual hello he stopped, said that he heard I’ve done some traveling. He mentioned some of the places he’d been too and I mentioned I’d been to a few of the same places and talked about it a bit with him. He looked at me very oddly and walked away.

The agency called me that evening and said that I wouldn’t be needed back at that office. To this day I don’t quite understand what had happened and find it peculiar. There are just some people you are not meant to understand.
