Author Bio:
Fiona Dodwell lives in the UK with her husband. She works in mental health, part-time, and writes dark fiction whenever she has the chance. She has studied an unusual mixture over the years, from film studies, theology and drama to psychology. She began entering fiction contests at a young age, winning several, and had some of her poems published. Her first horror novel to be published, The Banishing, is a dark story exploring demonic possession and domestic abuse, was released in March.

Tell me about yourself and your writing career to date.
I'm 29 years old, and I live in the UK with my husband. I have studied quite a varied mix over the years – from drama and psychology to film studies and theology. I began writing when I was a child – books were a passion from an early age – and the interest and fascination with creating stories flourished from there. My first book, The Banishing, has just been released with US Publisher Damnation Books. My second novel, Obsessed, has just been contracted for publication this summer!
Your new book is The Banishing. Can you tell us about it?
The story deals with some dark issues – from domestic abuse to demonic possession. As a reader you become intertwined in the life of a young woman who, after suffering abuse and torture at the hands of the man she is married to, begins to suspect there is something paranormal about his drastic change in behaviour.
What gave you the idea?
Well, the idea evolved over time. I have always been absolutely fascinated by the idea of demonic possession, but I loved the idea of taking this theme and throwing a whole new spin on it. Instead of projectile vomiting and spinning heads – the Hollywood version we all know - I wanted to use the idea of demons taking over the life of a human by using subtle means. Evil sneaking into the mind, like a snake, and planting thoughts and ideas into the human mind.
So why do you write?
I find it hard to answer this question, because it's been something I have done since I was a child. I write because I love it, because it's a magical experience, and because I simply can't imagine my life without it. It's a beautiful form of escapism.
As a reader what do you think good writing is?
Taking the reader into another world – to the point where you can forget you're sitting in your lounge with a book in your hands. If an author can transform my mind for one moment in time, and lift me out of my present environment, then they have a fan in me!
Who are some of your favourite writers and why?
Stephen King, because he is the master of the genre that is my favourite; Susan Hill because I love her subtle, sinister ways of telling stories, and Bill Hussey, because he is so fresh and original
What do you like most about writing?
Seeing a world and characters you create evolve and take on a life of their own. It's a wonderful feeling to see a story grow; the magic moment when you write something and the characters come to life and take the story into their own hands.
What do you like least about writing?
Knowing when to finish a story, knowing when it is complete and being able to leave it alone. I find the temptation to keep going back over things too great sometimes – and often I can end up losing myself in unnecessary changes. Of course, as a writer, you need to be able to revise and edit, but it's knowing when to stop that is the difficult part. Knowing when enough is enough. I think I'm getting better at that, as time goes on.
