Then in modern-day New Orleans he meets forensic scientist Sara Michaels...

MY REVIEW: I was looking forward to this title after reading the first in the series, MY IMMORTAL, last fall. This one didn't grab me like the first one did. As much as I enjoy McCarthy's writing, FALLEN started off slow and stayed that way. We learn about fallen angel Gabriel's past and the woman he loved named Anne who was stabbed to death while he slept off an absinthe high in a chair close by. Her murder has haunted him and he keeps away from any type of close contact with humans. Until he meets Sara. She appears at his doorstep in New Orleans to help him solve her own mother's murder which is eerily like Anne's. He writes true crime novels and she's a forensics expert. Sara thinks by working with him she can get some type of closure. Are the two deaths connected?

Yes, they are and as we wait to figure out what's going on we have pages of newspaper articles and interviews and court documents interspersed throughout to give us back story. At first I found this ploy interesting, then regarded them as filler. I liked Sara and Gabriel and thought their motivations and conflicts were explained well. As a whole I wanted more to happen in the story. Other fallen angels are introduced (which we may see in other titles in this series). The 'action' scenes weren't as fully realized and exciting as I'd hoped. In one word they were lame. When you have immortal beings fighting you expect more sizzle and excitement. This novel spent more time with the love story aspect which also moved slowly. At times my eyes began scanning through sections of flowery prose, expecting something to happen which didn't until the last chapter.

Since I already have the next book in this series, THE TAKING, I will read it at some point.

RATING: +++

SERIES: Yes, Book 2 of THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS.

FOR FANS OF: Adult contemporary fantasy; paranormal.

REVIEWED BY: Laurie

BOOK SOURCE: Swapped.

COVER COMMENT: Cool and intriguing, really makes you look harder at it to figure out the tattoo on her back (which I couldn't find any correlation to in the book). At least the model's hair is the correct color of Sara's.
