Reading level: Young Adult Hardcover: 320 pages Publisher: HarperTeen BOOK DESCRIPTION: Faerie can't lie . . . or can they? Much has changed since autumn, when Kelley Winslow learned she was a Faerie princess, fell in love with changeling guard Sonny Flannery, and saved the mortal realm from the ravages of the Wild Hunt. Now Kelley is stuck in New York City, rehearsing Romeo and Juliet and missing Sonny more with every stage kiss, while Sonny has been forced back to the Otherworld and into a deadly game of cat and mouse with the remaining Hunters and Queen Mabh herself.  When a terrifying encounter sends Kelley tumbling into the Otherworld, her reunion with Sonny is joyful but destined to be cut short. An ancient, hidden magick is stirring, and a dangerous new enemy is willing to risk everything to claim that power. Publisher : Walker & Company Date : December 2009 Page Count : 248 BOOK DESCRIPTION: On Solange's sixteenth birthday, she is going to wake up dead. As if that's not bad enough, she also has to outwit her seven overprotective older brothers, avoid the politics involved with being the only daughter born to an ancient vampire dynasty, and elude Kieran Black--agent of an anti-vampire league who is searching for his father's killer and is intent on staking Solange and her entire family. Luckily she has her own secret weapon--her human best friend Lucy--who is willing to defend Solange's right to a normal life, whether she's being smothered by her well-intentioned brothers or abducted by a power-hungry queen.  Two unlikely alliances are formed in a race to save Solange's eternal life--Lucy and Solange's brother Nicholas, and Solange and Kieran Black--in a dual romance that is guaranteed to jump start any romance-lover's heart. Even fans of the ge...

Publisher : Delacorte Press Books for Young Readers Date : October 2009 Page Count : 375 BOOK DESCRIPTION: When Thomas wakes up in the lift, the only thing he can remember is his first name. His memory is blank. But he's not alone. When the lift's doors open, Thomas finds himself surrounded by kids who welcome him to the Glade--a large, open expanse surrounded by stone walls.  Just like Thomas, the Gladers don't know why or how they got to the Glade. All they know is that every morning the stone doors to the maze that surrounds them have opened. Every night they've closed tight. And every 30 days a new boy has been delivered in the lift. Thomas was expected. But the next day, a girl is sent up--the first girl to ever arrive in the Glade. And more surprising yet is the message she delivers.  Thomas might be more important than he could ever guess. The Seven Rays by Jessica Bendinger

Image
Publisher : Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing Date : November 2009 Page Count : 330 BOOK DESCRIPTION: "You are more than you think you are." THAT IS THE ANONYMOUS MESSAGE that Beth Michaels receives right before she starts seeing things. Not just a slept-through my-alarm-clock, late-for-homeroom, haven't had-my-caffeine-fix kind of seeing things. It all starts with some dots, annoying pink dots that pop up on and over her mom and her best friend's face. But then things get out of control and Beth is seeing people's pasts, their fears, their secrets, their desires. The images are coming at Beth in hi-def streaming video and she can't stop it. Everyone thinks she's crazy and she's pretty sure she agrees with them. But crazy doesn't explain the gold envelopes that have started arriving, containing seeing keys and mysterious tarot cards. To Beth, it all seems too weird to be true. You are more than you think you are? But here's ...

Different Fairy Worlds Are Enchanting

Instead of reviewing (since I'm reading HEARTS AT STAKE & THE SEVEN RAYS), I thought I'd spend a little time on a subject matter I've read quite a lot of lately. Since December I've read Cyn Balog's FAIRY TALE, Lisa Mantchev's EYES LIKE STARS, Julie Karawa's THE IRON KING and I'm halfway through Lesley Livingstone's Darklight. Since last spring I've read Janni Lee Simner's BONES OF FAERIE, Nancy Werlin's IMPOSSIBLE, Aprilynne Pike's WINGS (I recently received the next book SPELLS) and Maggie Stiefvator's LAMENT: THE FAIRIE QUEEN'S DECEPTION (BALLAD is also on my TBR pile). The one common character they share are fairies, but they are all so diverse and very entertaining. A few titles share some similarities, of course, and most describe the fey as having long, pointy ears. Both WONDROUS STRANGE and EYES LIKE STARS are set in theaters with a strong nod to the characters in Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dre...
