Darklight by Lesley Livingston
Reading level: Young Adult
Hardcover: 320 pages
Publisher: HarperTeen
MY REVIEW: As I said earlier with my review of THE IRON KING, I wasn't a fan of the fae. I am now and it is due to books like Livingston's WONDROUS STRANGE, which hooked me into the world of pointy-eared, winged magical creatures.
DARKLIGHT continues Kelley's story. She is once again back in NYC at her beloved theatre, rehearsing for the next production of "Romeo and Juliet." The love story of the play is nicely mirrored throughout the novel, only adding to the enchanting quality of the author's work.
Since the backstory was already given to us in Book 1, this installment of the trilogy begins with intrigue. Some creature is dying and another receives its power. What was it and how does it involve our heroine? While Kelley is pursuing her love of the stage, her boyfriend, Sonny Flannery, is searching for the remaining members of the Hunt under King Auberon's direct order. They may be separated but each remembers the other fondly. As the story progresses we see the young lovers learn more about themselves, their abilities, and the secrets which are still kept from them until some come crashing down on their heads.
The story is full of action, we learn more about some of the Janus Guard, especially Fennrys the wolf (he deserves his own storyline). Kelley's mom, Queen Mabh, plays a prominent role this time. We learn a secret about one of her loves--a secret which will directly impact her daughter and Sonny, as well as direct the next and last book in this series.
DARKLIGHT is light, fun to read, and moves along at a steady pace. I really liked this book and if you read the first one, you're sure to enjoy this one even more.
RATING: ++++
SERIES: Yes, the second in the trilogy.
FOR FANS OF: Fairy stories; contemporary fantasies; romance; action.

Much has changed since autumn, when Kelley Winslow learned she was a Faerie princess, fell in love with changeling guard Sonny Flannery, and saved the mortal realm from the ravages of the Wild Hunt. Now Kelley is stuck in New York City, rehearsing Romeo and Juliet and missing Sonny more with every stage kiss, while Sonny has been forced back to the Otherworld and into a deadly game of cat and mouse with the remaining Hunters and Queen Mabh herself.
When a terrifying encounter sends Kelley tumbling into the Otherworld, her reunion with Sonny is joyful but destined to be cut short. An ancient, hidden magick is stirring, and a dangerous new enemy is willing to risk everything to claim that power. Caught in a web of Faerie deception and shifting allegiances, Kelley and Sonny must tread carefully, for each next step could topple a kingdom . . . or tear them apart.
With breathtakingly high stakes, the talented Lesley Livingston delivers soaring romance and vividly magical characters in darklight, the second novel in the trilogy that began with wondrous strange.
