Jessa has spent her life dreaming of other worlds and writing down stories more interesting than her own, until the day her favorite character, Finn, suddenly shows up and invites her out for coffee. After the requisite nervous breakdown, Jessa learns that she and Finn are Travelers, born with the ability to slide through reflections and dreams into alternate realities. But it’s not all steampunk pirates and fantasy lifestyles…Jessa is dying over and over again, in every reality, and Finn is determined that this time, he’s going to stop it… this Jessa is going to live.

Mysterious green-eyed boys. Strange, realistic dreams. Deja vu that's all too real. That strange 'thing' that happens by a mirror. Traveler by L.E. DeLano offers contemporary fantasy readers such an intriguing assortment of things to fall in love with while enjoying her YA novel. Main character Jessa is the type of character readers can easily admire. Jessa's a nerd, a geek, a reader and aspiring writer. What's not to like? She's just like us, except when she isn't. What? When Jessa sees the boy from her dreams, her life suddenly takes a very interesting turn as she discovers she's a 'traveler.' The author has created a fun, occasionally mind-scratching twist on time travel and alternate realities, with some mythology added in. Of course, there's romance, a maybe-it's-a-love-triangle thing, mystery, murder, and, oh! Did I mention the charismatic pirate?

Traveler is the type of book best not discussed much in reviews. Jessa and Finn's story has to be experienced. The less you know going in, the better. I will say I totally enjoyed this book. I stayed up until one in the morning to finish it in one reading and the time travel/alternate reality stuff kept me thinking long after my head hit the pillow. The characters become the heart of the story, especially Jessa and Finn, but her best friend Ben grabs at the heartstrings too. I also liked Jessa's relationship with her autistic brother, Danny, and how seeing the different versions of her 'family' in alternative worlds affected her. There's action, adventure, and emotional moments too. Something for everyone.

The story captured my imagination and my eyes couldn't read fast enough at times once the book really took off. The tension in certain spots made my pulse race and that epilogue--Swoon Reads, how could you do that to your readers? And when is the next book available??? I really rooted for Jessa and Finn. Their adventures suck you in and their chemistry is really good, especially pirate Finn. Let's talk about the swoon factor! Oh, there are also delectable desserts and fashions to imagine.

Also, let me advise anyone who hasn't read Traveler to heed this one tidbit of advice: take your time reading. Do not devour. Read wisely. Let the elements of the world building soak in. The idea of mirror travel has always fascinated me and DeLano offers readers some very cool concepts. Jessa's voice is compelling, her situations and conflicts realistic and gripping, and her travels are fascinating. Traveler is a fast, fun, and addicting read. Swoon Reads has to have the second book ready soon.

Rating: 4 really enjoyed this!
Cover comment: Cute, but the ship doesn't really come into play in this first book. If they're going to highlight 'things' from the travel aspect, then other images could've been used: the dystopian setting of one world, the colorful world of another, complete with that sparkly glitter dessert, are just some I can think of. Some type of mirror image or body of water with wavering images would have been more conducive to relaying the story content.
Book source: I received a digital ARC for my consideration to review for a tour.
