Love can exit your life as quickly as it enters it, shattering your heart in the process.

It's been a year since my husband was taken from me in a tragic accident. I thought it would kill me. Now, I think I'm ready to start healing.

My mother says my idea of taking a solo cross-country road trip is crazy, but I see it as my road to recovery. Along the way, I'll have to deal with the poor choices I've made since Ricky died. I'll have to overcome the terror that his death has caused me. I'll have to find my balance again.

And once I meet Luke and his young son, I'll have to decide if I can take the risk to do more than exist and learn to love again.

Excerpt
“Landon is perfect!” she squeed, not caring that there were a gaggle of women in the restroom waiting for a turn.
“He’s definitely hot,” I agreed, then asked, mildly confused, “Perfect for what?”
“To take you home tonight and give you a fabulous orgasm!”
I was pretty buzzed, but not so far gone that I didn’t look around at the giggling crowd with embarrassment. “What? He’s way too young for me.”
“He’s around my age,” Ginger protested. “I think he was a year behind me in school, which makes him twenty-five. He’s sexy, single, and has been looking at you like you’re a rare steak and he’s king of the jungle.”
“No he has not … And that makes him seven years younger than me. He’s practically a teenager,” I argued, leaning back against the wall so I didn’t fall over.
“Pshaw,” she replied, slurring her unintelligible words. “He’s so not a teenager. That man will make you see stars … I’ve heard good things.”

Bethany Lopez is one of my favorite New Adult contemporary romance authors. Her characters and their stories resonate with me and remain long after I've finished reading. When I heard she was writing adult women's fiction, I knew I had to check it out. More Than Exist is her first foray into the adult category and all I can say is she continues to impress me.

Mirabelle (Belle) is standing on a precipice, an invisible one, and if she steps forward she could (a) lose her life or (b) begin again. Belle is an alcoholic. Life had been so much better when her husband, Ricky, was alive, but after tragically losing him, she sought refuge with the bottle. A year later and she has decided to take that plunge and leave. Her old life hurts too much, but trying for something new isn't going to fix what's broken inside her. First off, she has to admit she has a problem and fix it. Can she? Will she?

There were times I wanted to yell at Belle, but I didn't. Instead, I turned the page and kept reading. She is smart, stronger than she thinks, and needs to feel again. Feel herself. Feel love. Feel alive. The first half of More Than Exist shows us an alcoholic on the verge of self-discovery; the second half deals with her healing and figuring out what she wants. There are tender moments, especially in the latter half with Luke and his son, Matty, but my favorite was when she first met Luke. That Belle and her predicament has incredible staying power. Also, the more that her friend Ginger's story was revealed, the more I understood what was going on with each woman. They enabled each other while fully knowing what they were doing was necessary for each to live each day.

The author did a terrific job covering addiction and recovery. I would've liked a scene or two of Belle's actual stay in rehab since I wasn't expecting such a jump in the timeline, but otherwise I was fully engaged and hooked into the novel.

Rating: 4 really liked it
Cover comment: Refreshing and the colors are appropriate for what the main character endures.
Book source: I reviewed this novel after receiving an ARC and volunteered to do so.
