Lia Nautilus may be a Mermaid, but she’s never lived in the ocean. Ever since the infamous Little Mermaid unleashed a curse that stripped Mer of their immortality, war has ravaged the Seven Seas.
So Lia has grown up in a secret community of land-dwelling Mer hidden among Malibu’s seaside mansions. Her biggest problems are surviving P.E. and keeping her feelings for Clay Ericson in check. Sure, he’s gorgeous in that cocky, leather jacket sort of way and makes her feel like there’s a school of fish swimming in her stomach, but getting involved with a human could put Lia's entire community at risk. So it’s for the best that he’s dating that new girl, right?
That is, until Lia finds out she isn't the only one at school keeping a potentially deadly secret. And this new girl? Her eyes are dead set on Clay, who doesn't realize the danger he's in. If Lia hopes to save him, she’ll have to get closer to Clay than ever. Lia’s parents would totally flip if they found out she was falling for a human boy, but the more time she spends with Clay, the harder it is for Lia to deny her feelings. After making a horrible mistake, Lia will risk everything to stop Clay from falling in love with the wrong girl.

With the exception of Disney's Arial, I don't consider myself much of a mermaid fan. But after diving into Tobie Easton's debut YA novel, Emerge, I might have to change my opinion. From the first chapter, I found myself a fan of main character Lia. She just happens to be a mermaid living in secret on land in Malibu, California. Her people were cursed by The Little Mermaid (from Hans Christian Anderson's story) and haven't been able to return to their war-ravaged home in the sea.
Lia is dealing with being the new girl in high school and everything that comes along with it, except in her case when we first meet her she's dealing with trying to get out of swimming in gym class. You know, the whole when legs touch water thing (like in the movie Splash). A cute guy comes to her rescue and from then on we know Clay is the one Lia likes. I thought the writing was very strong and so perfectly suited for the age group. I would recommend this title to younger YA readers who I believe will easily fall under Lia's spell. Her story is engrossing. There were times when I wanted to yell at her and make her question her decisions but isn't that the way it is when one is growing up and making mistakes while living?
Month9Books consistently releases impressive titles. This is a publisher that readers seeking something wholly different and unique can easily discover a title from their list to fall into and love. With Emerge, I enjoyed the drama and mystery, the storyline, the pacing was just right and the author has such a nice style of writing I easily fell into reading. I couldn't help rooting for Lia--mistakes and all--simply because she's such a nice character and I felt the same way about Clay. I also liked her best friend, Caspian, a fellow Mer person. The whole secret society and having the Mer people live on land gave the story a uniqueness I found intriguing. With such a likable heroine and a great boyfriend too, I think fans of mermaid tales should grab this book. I can't wait to see what happens to Lia in the next book. Arial move over and make some room for Lia, a relative, and rising star. Love the cover!
