Born To Die is a tightly written, highly enjoyable suspense novel. Main character Cassy River is a strong, admirable woman, a deputy dealing with PTSD and the scars from a previous kidnapping. When violence and crime come into her small town, an old acquaintance, Boyce Hunt, an FBI agent and her ex, returns to offer his assistance and stir up old feelings.
Murder, mystery, a crime spree, and an undeniable chemistry all add up into one engrossing read. Author Winter Austin begins this suspense novel with a gripping scene of blood, murder and secrets. A snowstorm, icy roads and a trail in the woods create the perfect backdrop and introduction to this small town of Eider story. This is the second book in the author's McIntire County series and I had not read the first book before jumping into this one. I wouldn't necessarily say this is a standalone because of the hinted at past stories and memories--I think if I had read the first book I would've enjoyed this installment even more. So I'm putting the first book, Atonement, on my must read list.
Rating: 4
Cover comment: In my opinion this cover doesn't represent Cassy and her story.
