No Promises by N. Raines
Publication date: January 15th 2016
Genres: New Adult, Romance

Synopsis:
A new adult romance by multi published author Nona Raines writing as N. Raines

She never met a stray she didn't love…

In high school, Sam Pennywell had a massive crush on Rick Russo. But he was her cousin’s boyfriend and strictly off-limits. Meeting Rick again years later, she can hardly recognize the man he’s become.

As a paramedic, Rick’s career is all about helping others. But in the line of duty, he’s become one of the injured. He’s caught in a dark place he can’t escape on his own. He can't make Sam any promises of love. Promises are too easily broken.

Sam spends her life taking care of sick and homeless animals. She's never met a stray she didn't love, and Rick is the most important rescue she'll ever make.

No Promises is a quick read featuring a sweet romance between two likable characters. And there are cats and kittens! Both Sam and Rick have their issues to deal with, hers being low self-esteem and his being a workplace incident. Both events have scarred them but when they reconnect at her cousin's birthday party, Sam's feelings from the past resurface.

I liked Sam. She comes across as real and is easy to connect to. She has a huge heart, wanting to care for and take in strays and help others out. Her simple, selfless act of wanting Rick to be safe that first night triggered a series of events which would connect these two for some time. Despite his drunken and rude behavior, Rick grew on me. Together, watching them admit there's something going on while trying to heal had me reading this New Adult contemporary in one sitting. I also liked that Sam took care of her dad when her brothers couldn't be bothered and how Rick immediately recognized her sacrifices and decided to help out in his own way. Her dad and cousin become welcome additions as secondary characters adding humor and color to this enjoyable novel.

In No Promises N. Raines' writing flows easily from chapter to chapter and her romantic scenes held just the right touch of romance and spice. There was no eye rolling or cringe-worthy moments with this reader. Sometimes sex takes over some NA romances without offering readers substance. That was not the case here. I really enjoyed my time with Sam and Rick and will definitely read more by this author.
