Excerpt
The air cooled even more, and the hamsa necklace buzzed at my throat. With a jolt, I checked the area. Shadows lurked in the bushes several yards away, their red eyes flashing behind the trees.
Hellhounds. Three, maybe four by my count. The urge to shudder tugged at my muscles. I stifled it. Don’t be afraid. It’ll make things worse. Nobody else can see them.
Had they hurt Dean and Jesse? Or were they trying to scavenge a free meal?
The hamsa buzzed more insistently. As the EMTs carried Dean off, Mr. Ballard followed to catch a ride in the already full ambulance. Farouk and I would soon be the last people there. And, with their mouths agape to scent the air, those hellhounds looked hungry.
“I’m cold. Let’s head back.” I kept my voice low, as though pretending to be calm and actually staying calm were the same thing.
One of the hounds fixed its attention on me and growled. It knew I could see them. I knew the school had been protected by sigils that kept creatures like them away, but we were outside school grounds. Though I’d seen Michael make quick work of them before, I had neither his ability nor his weapons. Would the hamsa alone be enough to stop them? If so, what about Farouk?
To play it safe, I armed myself with the nearest rock. Dean probably hadn’t gone down without a fight, and he was way stronger than me, but I knew how hellhounds worked. First, they fascinated their victims with fear, sapping their energy, and feeding on life force until they came into form. Then they devoured their victim’s flesh. Dean might not have had a chance to fight.
“What’s that?” Farouk asked motioning to one of the hellhounds lurking in shadow. “A stray?”
He could see it too? It must have materialized. “We should go,” I said. “It might be rabid or something.”
The hellhound growled again, as if to make its point, and Farouk froze. I wondered if he’d noticed its red eyes.
“Come on,” I said, tugging at his arm.
“I don’t want to turn my back on it.” Farouk dipped his head, averting his gaze. “If we run, it’ll treat us like prey.”
But we were prey.

About The Watcher (Book One in The Watcher Saga):

Millennia ago, he fell from heaven for her.
Can he face her without falling again?

Fascinated with ancient civilizations, seventeen-year-old Mia Crawford dreams of becoming an archaeologist. She also dreams of wings—soft and silent like snow—and somebody trying to steal them.

When a horrible creature appears out of thin air and attacks her, she knows Michael Fontaine is involved, though he claims to know nothing about it. Secretive and aloof, Michael evokes feelings in Mia that she doesn’t understand. Images of another time and place haunt her. She recognizes them—but not from any textbook.

In search of the truth, Mia discovers a past life of forbidden love, jealousy and revenge that tore an angel from Heaven and sent her to an early grave. Now that her soul has returned, does she have a chance at loving that angel again? Or will an age-old nemesis destroy them both?

Ancient history is only the beginning.

To celebrate the release of The Angel Killer,

The Watcher is currently 99 cents on Amazon Kindle.
