Own Me by Lexi Scott Silver Strands #3
Publication Date: August 17, 2015
Also in this series: Risk Me
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult, Romance
Synopsis: Genevieve Rodriguez’s life isn't panning out the way she’s always envisioned. At all. Not only is she exactly one “D” away from getting kicked out of school, but her heart is in pieces after her long-time crush marries someone else. For Genevieve, sunny Silver Strand has never felt more dismal.
Excerpt
My voice is shaky with emotion, and I
realize how dangerous “one tiny detail” can be. I’m a scientist. I know all
about chaos theory and fractals, the butterfly effect—I should be more careful.
The problem is, being with Genevieve makes
my usually logical brain short circuit.
“It’s normal to hate everything when you
lose someone you love,” she says, threading her fingers through mine.
“Yeah, it is.” I brush her hair back from
her face and let my palm linger on her cheek. She closes her eyes and breathes
deep. “But it starts to become a habit. I fight it every day. Because,
sometimes, I have beauty and happiness staring me right in the face, and I
never even notice. Until it’s too late. I don’t want to keep making that
mistake.”
“It’s not too late,” she says, her words a
soft promise. Or a dare? “We can make sure it isn’t. This will work, Adam.”
Her body is warm and soft in all the right
places. I haven’t slept with a girl since my summer fling with a visiting
research assistant, so some of what I’m feeling is pure, pent-up need. But
that’s not how this is going to go. I’m not going to use Genevieve, because
what I feel for her extends way beyond animal urges. I respect her. I love the
way she makes me feel, the way she makes me want to change.
“Do you want to go to the roof?” I ask,
and the words vibrate with my glaring frustration at my inability to keep a lid
on my erratic thoughts.
Her eyes startle wide open at my tone.
“Sure.”
I spin her body from mine in one neat
movement and we rush up the stairs, coming out onto the wide roof and into the
cool night air. Night took over while we were inside, and the deep blue of the
sky cools every temper that flared in me.
Rating: 4 really liked this
Cover comment: The first two covers were vivid with their strokes of ocean blue. This cover is kind of drab and monochromatic, like too much sepia spilled on it.

Marrying someone to help them get a green card has been done before in books and movies. Some have been successful, others have not. In Own Me by Lexi Scott, the oftentimes tired formula works. Why? One simple word: chemistry. Genevieve and Adam work well together and their connection is apparent on the page.
Both characters tell their stories in revolving pov which helps tremendously in figuring out whether or not their feelings for one another are true. Gen wants to help Adam out, he's been her tutor and friend and now she has a chance to do something nice for him. Adam is working on completing his thesis but forgot to fill out his papers on time and is in danger of being deported. In Israel, he won't have the opportunities he presently has. The decision to accept Gen's help isn't hard since he's loved her since he met her years ago.
This couple has to learn to trust and speak to one another. Their lack of discourse, of simply communicating, provided a lot of angst in this story and at times I wanted to toss a couple of knishes at their heads to wake them up. Their chemistry is definitely worth the angst and even though I haven't read the first two books in the Silver Strands series, this could be viewed as a standalone. There was enough backstory provided so I understood the roles of the other characters.
Own Me is a study in taking a friendship to another level, is romantic and sexy, emotional, and a very satisfying read. Genevieve and Adam transported me to their world and I enjoyed every minute I spent with them.
