Music as a Writer’s Muse

Yea! One of my favorite topics, music! Who doesn’t love music, right? I know a lot of authors talk about music influencing their work, and I completely get it. For me, it’s ‘mood music’, helping to set my mood for a particular scene or event. Sometimes it doesn’t take much, just the right poetic lyrics for a romantic interlude (“Depth Over Distance” by Ben Howard) or maybe something more aggressive for a fight scene (“The Darker Side of Me” by The Veer Union). When my characters were forced to descend into Hell, I found a song that literally transported me there with its looming sense of dread and thundering instrumentals (“Legions of Darkness” by Nox Arcana). I still get chills when I hear it.

So yeah, music gets my writer juices flowing. Lots of things can influence a writer’s work: movies, theater, books of course, even the odd relative, but for me music is a must. And I always make sure to pay homage to the music makers.

Each one of my young adult books in the Soulkeepers Series not only mentions songs that my characters are listening too, but provides a heartfelt thank you and a playlist at the end.
