(The Six #1)
Publication date: July 27th 2014
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult

“So you wanna be part of the Six, huh? You wish…”
~Jared, Ace, Mark, Josh, Aiden & Eli

Riley Clifton can’t remember a time when she wasn’t a part of the Six, a group of rowdy boys who would do just about anything for her. Growing up alongside of six guys is never easy. Especially in high school. Falling in love with one of the Six? Even harder when Ace has a hold of her heart, and he doesn’t even know it.

Jake (Ace) Aceton has loved Riley for a long time, but has kept the secret oath of the Six. Riley was off limits. At least until after graduation. When he overhears Riley admitting to her best friend, Paige how she feels about him, Ace doesn’t let his chance slip by. Riley, in his mind, has always been his.

When her college plan falls through, and her future is left to the hands of fate, Riley finds herself scrambling to keep up with all the changes. But that’s not the hardest part. The hardest part is saying good-bye, especially to Ace.

Heartache, hard lessons, and a love deeper than her Alabama roots will threaten to crumble Riley’s world as she waits for Ace’s return.

Will Riley and Ace’s love be strong enough to hold them together when life tries to tear them apart?

About the author:
Sonya Loveday, first and foremost is a reader, an avid one. It is of that love that brought her to purchasing her first laptop in 2009, and publishing her first novel, Casted, in 2013.
In early 2014, Sonya expanded Casted and then went on to publish Spelled, the sequel to Casted, in March, wrapping up the series, and her stint with Paranormal Romance. For now.
Not long after the completion to the Casted Series, Sonya tried her hand at New Adult/Coming of Age, a sub-genre of Contemporary Romance. Thusly, the Six were born with The Summer I Fell, which released at the end of July 2014. The demand from readers was instantaniously, which brought about End Note, the second book of the series in December 2014.

To date, Sonya lives in Central Florida with her husband, and two kids, and is currently working on her fifth book set to release later this spring 2015.

Riley has a group of seven close friends. Paige is her best friend and so are Jared, Mark, Eli, Aiden, Josh and Ace (Jake). The guys make up 'The Six' and they're a bunch of loud mouthed, trash-talking, good-natured guys. They've been friends for years and Riley is the only girl they've allowed to join their crew. This rural Alabama group has just graduated high school and are spending their last summer together (as much as they can) before they head in different directions. Some are going into the military, one's going to volunteer in Haiti, one is off to art school in New York City, another is also going to school and the last is hitting the road with a rock band. What's Riley doing? She was supposed to go away to college and study to become a vet, but something happened and she's stuck at home trying to figure out her future. Her dad, a trucker, is away much of the time, and she doesn't want to burden him. And to complicate things, Riley has professed her love for Ace and he's reciprocated. Now an item, they too have limited time together.

Wow, that's a big group of people to keep steady in your mind as you're reading. Of course, the focus is on new couple Riley and Ace, how they admit their true feelings, get together, and deal with the limited time left. I would have liked more backstory on this gang, feeling like I fell into their summer plans not knowing who they really are (this is where novellas are really helpful). One of my favorite summer reads is by C.J. Duggan and it's aptly titled the "Summer" series which features a lovable group of close friends and their romances. This story reminded me of that series.

Riley is a nice character, likable, spunky, filled with angst and emotion, dealing with her new relationship status along with her hormones and desires. There is so much to figure out and decide this summer and to see her dreams dashed because of the loss of a scholarship was extremely sad. The dynamics between her and her friends is awesome, even if they seem a bit too perfect together at times (the cabin Jared's parents had built for them is a cool idea). I found myself wondering occasionally if guys really acted or spoke some of the ways they did. Problems teen face are fully explored from questions about identity, prospects of the future, career choice, sex and love (and other topics) give the story a realistic feel. There seemed to be a lot of build up to the climatic scene and just as things were falling into place the tale ended. That cliffhanger ending was very emotional, even if I saw it coming.

I stayed up late hanging out with a fun group of teens, reading about their exploits, enjoying their passions, laughing along at their antics (Paige's outburst had me going) and wishing I could console a young lady named Riley. She really needed a mother around to help her. One of my favorite scenes was the 'necklace' and when this couple truly 'connects'. Loveday has created an engaging group of friends in The Six and I've become invested enough in their stories to continue the journey with them. Plus, after that ending, how else could I feel?
