About the book:

Young ruffian Rustav is determined to escape his abusive uncle and hated homeland, even if it means braving the demon-infested forest. His escape is halted, however, when a race of legendary beings reveal him to be the country’s fabled heir. As the people rally around him, Rustav teeters precariously between raising his people from the dust—or destroying them from the inside.

Excerpt:

Rustav dreamed that he was running through the forest, dodging trees and glancing over his shoulder, always hearing the tromp of boots or the whinny of horses just behind him. He was almost through to the other side, he was sure of it; he’d be free and clear in minutes. But then the trees began swaying ominously, branches reaching down to swipe his face and catch his clothes. A root flung itself up out of the ground, and Rustav tripped hard, skidding along the dead leaves and dirt. In an instant, roots were growing over him, trapping him against the ground. He twisted and pulled with all his might, but to no avail. A root snaked its way around his neck, tightening, unresponsive to Rustav’s mad scrabbling for breath—
“Rustav!”
Bolting straight up, Rustav found himself in an unfamiliar room with clay walls and a wood table. He looked around wildly for a few seconds before fixing his eyes on the old man standing beside him. Memory returned in a flood, and Rustav fell back onto his sleeping mat, heart racing.
“Are you all right?” Anton asked, his eyes concerned. Rustav stared at him, trying to blink the blurriness from his swollen right eye.
“How do you know my name?”
“You’ve been muttering to yourself all night,” Anton said, his careful lightness obviously meant to offset Rustav’s aggression.
All it really did was set Rustav more on edge, especially as he considered what else he might have said.
