I love ghost stories so signing up for this tour was an easy decision. A Whispered Darkness is an interesting read and fans of creepy paranormal stories will want to check it out. Claire's family is going through changes. Her dad leaves and her mom moves her and her brother, Grant, to a strange house in a new town. Poor Claire is dealing with her own issues, namely trying to keep her mental health healthy which isn't easy when one can hear the voices of the dead. The house itself is weird with its gloomy setting and strange noises. Claire can see the ghosts inhabiting the old Victorian and the paranormal aspect of the story is cool. She also meets two guys, cousins Bryan and Haven, and develops feelings for them. Her mom begins to act stranger than usual and Claire worries that the ghosts may be interfering. Or could it be a case of possession?
I liked the relationship between Claire and Grant. They seemed to truly care for each other. As for her relationship with the guys, though a bit quick, I could understand why Claire latched onto these guys with concerns about her sanity and such. What I couldn't understand was why Claire's mom thought buying the house she did would be a good, mature decision, especially with her daughter's history of hospitalization for mental illness. I thought the paranormal parts were intriguing and kept me reading. The pace was a bit unsteady in parts and that's okay since I liked Claire and wanted to see what would happen.
All in all I found A Whispered Darkness to be an entertaining and atmospheric YA paranormal. Drama, romance, a girl who can talk to ghosts and a possessed mom made for a cool weekend afternoon read.

Vanessa Barger was born in West Virginia, and through several moves ended up spending the majority of her life in Virginia Beach, Virginia. She is a graduate of George Mason University and Old Dominion University, and has degrees in Graphic Design, a minor in Medieval and Renaissance Literature, and a Masters in Technology Education. She has had articles published in Altered Arts Magazine, has had some artwork displayed in galleries in Ohio and online, and currently teaches engineering, practical physics, drafting and other technological things to high school students in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. She is a member of the SCBWI (Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators) and the Virginia Writer's Club. When not writing or teaching, she’s a bookaholic, movie fanatic, and loves to travel. She has one cat, who believes Vanessa lives only to open cat food cans, and can often be found baking when she should be editing.
