“Emma stuck her face to the window to watch the rain. Lightning in the background drew a fiery specter in the sky while her eyes traced the water droplets running down the pane like tears.” Emma Willis is ten years old and has a secret. She not only inherited her grandmother’s power of sight, she can accomplish much more. Like most children without siblings growing up amongst adults, she is precocious yet at times lonely. When a murderer is loose in Newark, a maniac with a thirst for killing little girls, she begins to understand why her Granny Dottie called her sight a curse. She will need all her powers to catch a killer and help the people in her life: Detective Hank Apple, her teacher Christina Tyler, and her little family of three. Only … the madman knows who she is!

Excerpt

Emma propelled herself to somewhere she knows nothing about and she is standing in a little convenience store waiting for Hank to come and get her, terrified she will be discovered.

The little bell hanging on top of the door told Emma someone had entered. She crouched down, browsing at boxes of cereal on the lower shelf when an all too familiar voice drew her attention.

“Give me a pack of Parliaments,” the man asked. Emma peeked through the space between the shelves and caught sight of a man with a pony tail and a long bent nose and had to stifle a scream.

“Did any weird punk come in here?” he asked the clerk.

“Nine dollars,” the clerk shouted.

“Highway robbery. These cigs were seven fifty yesterday. You got a gun back there or something?”

“You pay and get out or I call the cops,” the little man spouted in a strong accent.

“Take it easy, Chink. No one’s out to hurt you. I just need a few more things.”

Emma eyed the restroom to her right and hoped the door wasn’t locked. She crawled to the door on her hands and knees, stretched to turn the handle and slid inside where she hurried to lock the door. Alone in the dark, she sat on the toilet seat and cried silently.

Now, Hank would come around and think she was gone.
