Historical Heartthrobs: 50 Timeless Crushes – from Cleopatra to Camus
by Kelly Murphy with Hallie Fryd
Published by ZestBooks and distributed by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt; $17.99 Hardcover; ISBN: 978-1-936976-10-2; Ages 14+}
History comes alive in Historical Heartthrobs, especially when reading it causes you stop and consider the likes of Eva Peron, Lord Byron and Ernest Hemingway as potential members of your dating pool. Some items for consideration: Nikola Tesla was a brilliant inventor who made Victorians swoon, but he seems incapable of swooning back. Che Guevara had the smoldering good looks, but would he only look out for himself in a relationship? And what about Nelly Bly? Was it legal to look that good in 1884? Historical Heartthrobs includes both men and women from a wide range of countries, ethnicities, and historical epochs. Some are artists, some are scientists, and many are political or military leaders, but all have had a lasting impact on human life—and a sizable impact on their admirers as well.
Historical Heartthrobs: 50 Timeless Crushes – from Cleopatra to Camus
by Kelly Murphy with Hallie Fryd is an interesting compilation and a definite conversation starter. From movie stars to artists, various political figures both loved and reviled, writers, poets, and more, this list of fifty swoon-inducing individuals compiled in a fun, old-fashioned book features each individual on a four page spread complete with full page photo and accompanying info graphics and facts.
I've never thought of any of these people picked as necessarily 'hot' and yet with the way they're presented with bold headlines and intriguing facts, the authors present an interesting case for each person. The information contains just the right amount of fact with trivial tidbits to pique anyone's interest. The assortment is widespread and I'll admit quite a few names made my eyebrows raise at their inclusion. Did the authors really need to include Fidel Castro ('hot" doesn't come to my mind as a way of describing him) and a Nazi? What may appeal to some doesn't necessarily appeal to me, but then I guess, like everything in life, taste is subjective and the book does pose the question "Would you date them?".
Historical Heartthrobs: 50 Timeless Crushes – from Cleopatra to Camus is a thought-provoking collection in a whimsical package.
Cover comment:
I like the graphic but I'm not sure it's as effective as it could be to convey the material included inside.

I received a promotional copy from the publisher in exchange for my honest review during a blog tour.
