A Boat Made Of Bone by Nicole Grotepas
New Adult Paranormal Romance/Urban Romance
Published January 13, 2014

Kate Miller has been having recurring dreams about the same man . . . a dead man. Will Hawke, to be exact, a celebrity who died long before Kate had any reason to pay attention to celebrities.

While the night-world she enjoys with Will beckons, her waking world has suddenly gotten intriguing. Ty Watts--a guy with looks that could set a thousand housewives free--just walked into her life. He's got a smile and a secret that begs to be found out.

But is Ty a distraction or a savior?

Kate's dreams threaten to take over. She must negotiate the edge of reality, solve the mystery of her nightly rendezvous with Will and either set him free or lose herself forever in the seductively dangerous world he inhabits.

A Boat Made of Bone is a love story that spans worlds, generations, and reaches beyond death into the realm of fantasy.

Kate seems to live two lives: by day she works in a record shop, has a slew of engaging friends, is an avid rock climber, and has two roommates. She is a nice young woman, kind of meek and doesn't have a high esteem of herself. But at night, Kate becomes a confident, sexy, says what she wants to say type of woman and openly pursues a sexy relationship with a man she sees in her dream world. Day Kate and Night Kate begin to interfere with each other as she wants to bring her lover, Will, into her living life. He has told her he is dead, but as the nights pass, she begins to suspect something else. To complicate matters, she meets Ty, a hunky fellow rock climber, who pursues her with his chiseled checks and sexy grin, but there are moments when he appears menacing. What is Kate to do?

A Boat Made Of Bone by Nicole Grotepas is an interesting read with a dreamy, almost surreal feel to it. As the days pass, Kate's two worlds grow closer to each other, her dream world threatening to impact her real. She loves the man from her nighttime otherworldly visits and discovers he used to be an actor. As the living, breathing Ty makes his interest in her known, she finds herself gravitating more to the dead man who has truly captured her heart. Is Will dead? Or trapped in some type of limbo? Can she figure out a way to help him and then can she deal with losing him too?

The concept of the story is an intriguing one. I have always found the concept of two worlds-one real and one not?-possibly intersecting or connecting alluring. With Kate's story, I found myself wondering what was really going on with Will as the story progresses. When I find my answer and Kate's nighttime world of sexual escapades turns dark and alarming, I wished for more of a build-up to it. The slow pacing up until this point had created a surrealistic feel and the sudden change surprised me. There was a lot of time spent on scenes inside the music store along with her coworkers and friends (does Ferg have a thing for her?). The storyline of everyone pitching in to help keep the store open didn't seem to expound upon the novel as a whole. I felt the two world didn't connect to each other while real-life characters I thought may play some type of mysterious part in the other did not. I will also say finding out Will was Kate's lover in the opening scene was a bit of a letdown.

Two worlds colliding made for an interesting if uneven read in A Boat Made of Bone

About the Author

Nicole wrote her first fantasy novel in 7th grade on her mother's old Brother typewriter. It was never finished but it strongly resembled a Dragonlance plot and she's forever wondered what happened to the manuscript and Tonathan--the handsome elven protagonist. After living in Nashville where she worked as an editor, she returned to the Utah desert where she was raised. Nicole now lives near the Wasatch mountains with her husband. She writes and raises her son and three cats full time.
