Sneaking Candy by Lisa Burstein
New Adult contemporary romance
Paperback/eBook, 205 pages
Published December 9th 2013 by Entangled Publishing

All I ever wanted was to make a name for myself as Candice Salinas, creative writing grad student at the University of Miami. Of course, secretly I already have made a name for myself: as Candy Sloane, self-published erotic romance writer. Though thrilled that my books are selling and I have actual fans, if anyone at UM found out, I could lose my scholarship…and the respect of my faculty advisor, grade-A-asshole Professor Dylan.

Enter James Walker, super-hot local barista and—surprise!—my student. Even though I know a relationship is totally off-limits, I can’t stop myself from sneaking around with James, taking a few cues from my own erotic writing…if you catch my drift. Candy’s showing her stripes for the first time in my real life, and I’ve never had so much fun. But when the sugar high fades, can my secrets stay under wraps?

Sneaking Candy by Lisa Burstein is an engrossing, fast-paced, fun read. Candice is the type of young woman I can easily relate to and her outlook on life, school, work and guys had me shaking my head in agreement numerous times. She's a hard worker, assisting Professor Dylan as his teaching assistant, and she soon realizes the quasi-crush she had on him wasn't the real thing. Nope, the real thing is how she feels around the hottie preparing her chai latte inside the coffee place. His name is James and Candice is in for trouble after meeting him.

James is totally swoonworthy. Gorgeous, nice, and intelligent (and he rides a Harley). His bantering with Candice after she throws herself at him and then finds out he's a student and untouchable are a joy to read--sexy, fun and dripping with heat. As an English major myself, I thoroughly enjoy their conversations on writing and authors (yeah for Salinger!). Knowing Candice was this serious grad student slash teacher by day and author of bestselling erotica by night/free time added a heap of tension and amusement. Her thoughts had me giggling as I tried picturing some of the scenes she imagined.

The heart of Sneaking Candy is about writers writing and their need to share their creations. Candice desires to be a traditionally published author but she needed to make a quick buck and took the self-publishing route. Now she's a successful author with a pen name so her success is not known. How would her male professor--a New York Times bestseller and publishing darling grooming student James for a similar career--think about her 'secret' non-traditional path? Luckily, no stands are made or sides drawn. I appreciate that and I was also glad for a sexy writer there weren't overly descriptive scenes. Implied can be good (that's what imaginations are for).

I haven't had this much fun reading a New Adult contemporary romance in quite some time. Well written, tight, the scenes flowed, I fell into Candice's story and enjoyed every second spent with her. Her insecurities, her jealousies, her need to show her parents they were wrong, her problems, concerns and conflicts all resonated with me. She was a New Yorker (yep, like me) studying at the University of Miami and living two lives begins to interfere with her normal life with comical results. Plus, add her attraction to James and their subsequent 'sneaking' around, and the plot thickens. I can't say what happens. I will say if NA romance is your thing, don't hesitate to pick up Sneaking Candy. Eating sweets was never this good.
