When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
Back when I was eight or so, I tried my hand at my first story. I was hooked from then on. Though at that point, I had no idea what I was doing. It wouldn’t be until decades later when I discovered the madness and joy of National Novel Writing Month that I finally figured out my inner editor was squelching my writing process. NaNoWriMo taught me to kill the editor, which finally set me free.
Do you have a routine that you use to get into the right frame of mind to write?
Yeah, it’s called kidnapping to movie scores. I kid you not. I usually force my poor writer peeps out to the coffee shop with me, so they can keep me off Facebook. Yeah, I’m an addict, okay? And I can’t write without a movie score playing on my iPod. I cannot write at home. Three things distract me incessantly there: TV, Xbox, and laundry, and not necessarily in that order.
Where do you get your ideas or inspiration for your characters?
This is a difficult question for me. Sometimes they just pop in my head and I don’t know how or why. Sometimes I build out a personality based on my theme, a snippet of dialogue, a dream, or another fictional or film character. Regardless, it takes me a LONG time to build my characters, and usually they are pulling double or triple duty, as is the case with my debut novel, Artemis Rising, in which almost every major character plays three parts.
What books have most influenced your life?
Oh, this is a short list, but the books are some of the best ever written in my opinion:
A Tale of Two Cities, Charles Dickens
Of Honest Fame, M.M. Bennetts
The Power of One, Bryce Courtenay
Tess of the D’urbervilles, Thomas Hardy
What do you like to do when you are not writing?
I have a large number of hobbies I’ve dabbled in over the years—oil painting, pastels, playing piano, singing, composing—but these days I’m focused mostly on downhill skiing / racing. I’m a bit of a speed junkie. Yeah, it’s a problem. I’m dealing.
Any future writing news you would like to share?
I’m going to tackle my most ambitious project to date next: a scifi trilogy set mostly in space with the most unusual main character I’ve ever conceived.
